Opana Information:
What is Opana?
As an opiate analgesic, the Opana drug interacts with the opioid-mu receptor and alters the way the body responds to physical pain. It is typically only prescribed to patients who experience ongoing, long-term pain and who have not found relief from other pain medications. If you are prescribed Opana, your doctor will most likely start you on a low dose and increase the dose as needed.
How do I take Opana?
Opana medication is available as a tablet and extended release tablet, both of which are taken by mouth. Follow your doctor or pharmacist’s instructions for taking this drug; most patients take Opana every 4 to 6 hours (or every 12 hours for the extended release capsules) and at least an hour before eating. Extended release tablets should be swallowed rather than chewed or crushed. Tell your doctor if you have difficulty swallowing the tablet.
Before taking Opana, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to oxymorphone or any other narcotic medications, such as morphine or codeine
- You have ever experienced a head injury or brain disorder
- You are currently breastfeeding
- You have ever experienced any kind of breathing problems, including asthma, sleep apnea, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- You have kidney disease, liver disease, gallbladder disease, or disease of the pancreas
- You have ever experienced serious stomach or intestinal problems
- You have a history or family history of mental illness or substance abuse
- You have low blood pressure
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications
What are the possible Opana side effects?
Some patients report experiencing dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, a fever, headaches, stomach pain, confusion, or fatigue after taking Opana pills. Rare but serious side effects may also include an increased heart rate, trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, skin irritation, seizures, or fainting. Contact your doctor right away if you experience these or any other side effects.
What if I forget to take a dose of Opana?
Take the missed dose of your Opana medication as soon as you remember, unless it is already time or almost time for your next scheduled dose. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How do I store Opana?
Store Opana away from light and moisture, out of reach and out of sight of pets and children. Follow your pharmacist’s instructions to dispose of any tablets that have expired or that you are no longer going to use. Do not let anyone else take your unused medication.
What happens if I overdose on Opana?
Overdosing on Opana can lead to serious side effects, including a slowed heart rate, slowed breathing, extreme fatigue, and loss of consciousness. If you or someone in your household overdoses on this drug, seek emergency medical attention immediately by calling 911.
Warnings
An Opana dosage that is too strong for the individual may cause life-threatening breathing problems. For this reason, your doctor should start by prescribing you a low dosage and monitor you carefully to see how you respond. Certain other drugs may increase the risk of breathing problems, so tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking.
There is some risk of developing an addiction to Opana, so follow the instructions on your prescription carefully and never take more than the intended dosage. Do not drink alcohol while taking Opana, as this may increase your risk of experiencing serious side effects.
Brand Names
The Opana drug is the brand name version of the generic oxymorphone. You may also see the brand name Opana ER, which is the extended release version of the medication. Talk to your doctor about which form of the drug may be right for you.
