What is Opana Er?
Opana Er is an extended-release opioid analgesic prescribed for round-the-clock management of moderate to severe pain. It relieves pain by acting on the central nervous system and is prescribed for those with a long-term need; it is not for use on an “as needed” basis.
How do I take Opana Er?
Opana Er is dispensed in tablet form and administered twice daily in twelve hour intervals. Take it with water on an empty stomach at least one to two hours after a meal. Do not soak, lick, bite, crush, or chew the Opana Er tablet. What are the possible side effects of taking Opana Er?
Some patients have reported side effects after taking Opana Er, some of them more severe than others. Mild side effects include disorientation or confusion, sleeping problems, extreme fatigue, dry mouth, dizziness, fever, itching, headache, changes in appetite, and stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include tachycardia, chest pain, loss of consciousness, seizures, lightheadedness when rising from a seated or prone position, or signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the lips, mouth, throat, tongue, or face.
What if I forget to take a dose of Opana Er?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Opana Er, take a tablet as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next dose, skip the one missed, and resume the normal schedule. Do not take multiple doses to make up for the one not taken.
How do I store Opana Er?
Keep Opana Er in its original container, out of the reach of children, and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Because of its potential for abuse, keep a record of all tablets in the prescription. Dispose of any unused or expired dosages according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Opana Er?
If an overdose of Opana Er is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has collapsed or has stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include cold, clammy skin, constricted or dilated pupils, muscle weakness, extreme fatigue or sleepiness, breathing problems, a bluish tinge to the lips or nails, or loss of consciousness.

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Opana Er. This medication has the potential for abuse, dependence, or addiction. Do not stop taking Opana Er abruptly without a doctor’s permission. Opana Er may cause drowsiness; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, or use power tools until you are aware of its effects. This medication may cause constipation. Opana Er may cause lightheadedness or fainting when rising from a seated or prone position. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.
