What is Penlac?

Penlac is an antifungal drug that is specifically used to treat fungal infections of the fingernails or toenails. It comes as a clear nail lacquer that is applied directly to the affected nails, and it may be used for up to 48 weeks to kill the fungus causing the infection.

How do I use Penlac?

Apply Penlac to the entire surface of the affected nail(s) once a day. It is fine to apply a new coat of Penlac over an old one, although you should remove the coats of lacquer once a week using alcohol. After you have applied a new coat of lacquer, let it dry before putting on socks (if you are using it on your toenails), and wait at least 8 hours before taking a shower or bath. Keep all scheduled appointments with your doctor during the course of your treatment; your doctor will likely need to remove unattached infected nails on a monthly basis.

Before taking Penlac, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to this or any other medications
• You are using any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
• You have a seizure disorder
• You have diabetes
• You frequently experience numbness in your fingers or toes
• You have a weakened immune system
• You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of taking Penlac?

Mild side effects of Penlac may include burning, itching, or redness of skin around the treated nails. If you have skin or nail irritation that becomes bothersome, tell your doctor. Stop using the Penlac drug and call your doctor right away if you experience severe skin irritation, blistering or swelling at the application site, or discoloration of the treated nails.

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to use a dose of Penlac?

If you forget to apply your daily coat of Penlac, apply it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next application. In this case, skip the missed application and resume your normal schedule. Do not apply more of the lacquer than you normally would in an effort to catch up.

• Storage

How do I store Penlac?

Penlac is flammable, so do not store it anywhere near high heat or open flame. Keep the bottle tightly sealed and out of reach of any children or pets in your home. Store it at room temperature, away from light and moisture. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of it safely.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Penlac?

It is unlikely that you will overdose on Penlac when applying it to your nails, but this medication may be hazardous if swallowed. If you or someone in your household has swallowed any of this prescription nail lacquer, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) right away.

Warnings

Keep the Penlac nail lacquer away from your nose, eyes, and mouth. If you do get this topical medication in any of these areas, rinse with water immediately. Do not use other cosmetic nail products, such as artificial nails or nail polish, while using Penlac.

 

Brand Names
