Percocet Information:
What is Percocet?
Percocet is a combination drug of acetaminophen and oxycodone. While oxycodone is considered an opioid pain medication, acetaminophen is not. Though acetaminophen is still a pain reliever, it is not nearly as strong and works to elevate the effects of the oxycodone. Percocet is used to treat moderate to severe pain.
How do I take Percocet?
Percocet should be taken as directed by your doctor and the dosage is based on your condition and how your body responds to the medication. The medication comes in a pill or liquid form. As with most pain medications, they are most effective if taken at the very first onset of pain. A percocet pill can be taken with or without food. In some cases, people may experience nausea, and if this is the case, it may be better to take with food.
Before taking Percocet, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to percocet or other narcotics or any other medications
- You had or have any of the following medical conditions: brain disorders, problems with breathing problems, kidney disease, liver disease, mental health issues, history of alcohol or drug abuse, stomach/intestinal/bowel problems, urinary issues, gallbladder disease, or pancreatitis.
- If you have diabetes, an alcohol dependence, liver disease, or phenylketonuria (PKU). The liquid version of Percocet may include sugar, aspartame, and/or alcohol, which could be harmful if you suffer from any of those conditions.
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications.
- You are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or think you may be pregnant.
What are the possible side effects of taking Percocet?
Some more common side effects that should be mentioned to your doctor include: Nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, constipation, or lightheadedness. Each can be addressed and hopefully resolved. Best practices while taking Percocet include: eating a high fiber to avoid constipation, exercising regularly, and drinking water. If the constipation is unresolved, taking a laxative may be helpful. When trying to address issues with dizziness and lightheadedness, simply rising up slowly and steadily may help to reduce this side effect.
Other more serious side effects that require contacting your doctor immediately include: severe stomach upset or pain in the abdomen, difficulty urinating, fainting, seizure, labored breathing, or difficulty waking up. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching/swelling of the throat, face or tongue, or severe dizziness.
What if I forget to take a dose of Percocet?
If you forgot to take a scheduled dosage, it is okay to take your Percocet as soon as you remember if. Though if it is time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed one, and continue taking your percocet pills as prescribed. Taking double doses to make up for a missed one is not recommended.
How do I store Percocet?
Depending on the type of percocet you are taking, storage instructions will vary. If you are taking percocet pills, they should be kept in the airtight pill bottle they came in. It is a good idea to keep the medication in a temperature-controlled environment away from heat or excess moisture. Percocet should be kept out of reach of children. Any old or unused medication should be discarded.
What happens if I overdose on Percocet?
If allergic reaction or overdose is suspected, contact the local poison control center (1-800-222-1222) or go to an emergency clinic immediately. If you or the person is unable to move or is no longer breathing, call 911.
Warnings
The Percocet drug contains oxycodone, which is a morphine-like substance and may have an impact on one’s mental and/or physical abilities. Percocet should not be combined with alcohol, other opioid painkillers, tranquilizers, sedatives, or antidepressants unless it is the recommendation of your prescribing doctor. It is advisable to taper off of Percocet as opposed to stopping it abruptly. Percocet is a drug that has potential for abuse, so it is important to be mindful of yourself and others when taking it.
