What is Ponstel?
Ponstel, is the drug mefenamic acid, an NSAID; it is an analgesic that works by stopping the body from producing substances that cause inflammation and pain. It is prescribed to treat mild to moderate pain including that of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or painful menstruation.
How do I take Ponstel?
Ponstel is dispensed as a capsule that is taken orally every six hours with food for up to one week. Take this medication only as directed and do not crush, chew, or separate the capsule.
Before taking Ponstel, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to mefenamic acid, NSAIDs (including aspirin) or any of the ingredients in Ponstel
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking NSAIDs, anticoagulants, antacids, ACE inhibitors, zafirlukast, amiodarone, oral steroids, lithium, atazanavir, metronidazole, clopidogrel, sulfamethoxazole, diuretics, ritonavir, efavirenz, fluvastatin, fluconazole, methotrexate, lovastatin, trimethoprim, or sulfinpyrazone
- You smoke or drink alcohol
- You have, have had, or there is a family history of heart diseases, heart attack, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, or high cholesterol
- You have, or have had, ulcers, stomach or intestinal bleeding, other bleeding disorders, or kidney or liver disease
- You have, or have had asthma or nasal polyps
- You will be having heart surgery, a coronary bypass graft, or surgery of any kind (including dental).
What are the possible side effects of taking Ponstel?
Some people have reported side effects after taking the Ponstel drug. Less severe symptoms include constipation, gas, diarrhea, dizziness, bloating, headache, nervousness or agitation, and tinnitus. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact you doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), heartburn, back pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, vision problems, a change in urine color, problematic or painful urination, excessive tiredness, slurred speech, weakness on one side of the body, tachycardia, arrhythmia, fever, flu-like symptoms, malaise, appetite loss, nausea, pain in the upper right part of the stomach, pale skin, unusual weight gain, symptoms of jaundice, or unusual bleeding or bruising.
What if I forget to take a dose of Ponstel?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of your Ponstel medicine, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase dosage or take it more frequently to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Ponstel?
Keep Ponstel tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Ponstel?
If an overdose of Ponstel is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include black, tarry, or bloody stools, extreme tiredness, nausea, slowed breathing, stomach pain, bloody vomit, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
Warnings
Taking Ponstel or other NSAID medicines increases the risk of heart attack or stroke. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Ponstel may cause ulcers, perforations, or bleeding in the stomach or intestines. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Seek immediate medical help if you experience chest pain, slurred speech, shortness of breath, or other signs of a heart attack or stroke.
