Pyridium Information:
What is pyridium?
Pyridium is a medication for the effective relief of pain, burning, urgency and other discomforts which may result from irritation to the lower urinary tract, including the bowel and urethra, from surgery, trauma, infection or endoscopic procedures. Pyridium is effective on the urinary tract and is sometimes used along with an antibiotic or other anti-infective medication at the beginning of treatment to help provide immediate symptomatic relief. Typically, these symptoms are caused by infection, injury, surgery, catheter or other irritants. While pyridium medication treats the symptoms, it is important to note that pyridium uses do not include treating the actual infection or cause. Since pyridium only provides relief from the symptoms of the problem, pyridium use should not delay proper diagnoses and treatments of the underlying conditions. Pyridium doses can be administered with 100mg or 200mg tablets.
How do I take pyridium?
You can save money on your pyridium costs by purchasing your medications at your local pharmacy using our free pyridium coupon or discount card. Pyridium doses will be different for different patients, and you should follow precisely the instructions provided by your doctor. The amount of your pyridium dose will depend on the number of doses you take per day, the length of time you take the medication, and the purpose for which you are taking pyridium. Do not take pyridium in larger amounts than prescribed, for longer periods than prescribed, or more often than prescribed. You should take your pyridium medication with a full glass of water. If you experience stomach upset, you should take pyridium with food.
Before taking pyridium, tell your doctor if:
- You have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.
- You have kidney disease.
- You have an unusual or allergic reaction to phenazopyridine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives.
- You are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, or you are breastfeeding.
- You are taking any prescription drugs, non-prescription over-the-counter drugs, or any herbal remedies.
What are the possible side effects of taking pyridium?
If, after taking pyridium, you experience discomfort or have questions about your body’s reaction, you should contact your doctor. A common side effect to taking the pyridium medication is the darkening of the color of your urine to an orange or red color. You should not be concerned with this unless you also have other side effects, such as yellowed skin, fever, stomach pain, nausea or vomiting. Other less-serious pyridium side effects may include headache, dizziness, upset stomach or itching.
While the following list is not conclusive, you should seek emergency medical treatment if you experience any of the following signs of allergic reaction to pyridium: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling around your face, lips, tongue or throat. Other serious pyridium side effects include pale skin, fever, confusion, weakness, jaundice, changes in the amount or frequency of your urination, mood swings, thirst, loss of appetite, swelling, shortness of breath, or blue or purple discoloration of your skin.
What if I forget to take a dose of pyridium?
If you forget to take your medication, take your missed pyridium dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at your regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.
How do I store pyridium?
Store pyridium at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your medication away from heat and moisture and out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on pyridium?
If you have overdosed on pyridium, you should contact your poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include yellowed skin or eyes, fever, confusion, weakness, nausea, vomiting, swelling, numbness or blue-colored skin. If the patient is unconscious, call 911 for immediate medical treatment.
Warnings
Do not use pyridium for longer than 2 days unless your doctor has told you to. Pyridium side effects can permanently stain soft contact lenses, so you should not wear your lenses while taking pyridium. Some patients with good renal function who have ingested an overdose in patients and patients with impaired renal function who have been administered the normal dose may experience increased serum levels and toxic reactions.
