Floxin Information:
What is Floxin?
Floxin is a quinolone antibiotic. It is often used to kill the bacteria causing infections of the urinary tract, prostate, lungs, and skin. It is also sometimes used to treat chlamydia, gonorrhea, and pelvic inflammatory disease. It is not an effective form of treatment for fungal or viral infections.
How do I use Floxin?
Your use of Floxin will depend on your condition and the form of medicine your doctor prescribes, so follow all prescription instructions carefully. If you are using the pill form of this antibiotic, take it with or without food at the same times every day. Continue taking Floxin on a consistent schedule for the entire course of treatment, even if your symptoms go away. Stopping the use of an antibiotic too soon may allow the bacterial infection to return and be more resistant to medication.
Before using Floxin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially blood thinners
- You have a history of a specific muscle disorder (myasthenia gravis)
- You have a personal or family history of heart problems, such as QT prolongation or a slow heart rate
- You have a history of brain tumors or head injury
- You have low potassium levels in your blood
- You have arthritis or other joint or tendon problems
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have a nerve disorder
- You have diabetes
- You have a seizure disorder
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of using Floxin?
The most commonly reported side effects of the Floxin drug include nausea, upset stomach, mild headache, mild diarrhea, dizziness, and vaginal irritation. If you have any of these side effects and they last a long time or get worse, inform your doctor. Stop using Floxin and tell your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects, including easy bruising or bleeding, increased sun sensitivity, flu-like symptoms, jaundice, stomach pain, dark urine, watery or bloody diarrhea, or severe fatigue. Get emergency medical attention in the rare event that you experience unusual vision or hearing changes, an irregular heart rate, unusual mental changes, severe dizziness, fainting, or seizures. This is not a complete list of side effects, and you should always contact your doctor if you have any other conditions that bother you.
What if I forget to use Floxin?
It is important to take Floxin at regular intervals to keep the amount of medicine consistent in your body. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In this case, skip the missed one and resume your normal dosage schedule.
How do I store Floxin?
Store the Floxin drug at room temperature, away from light and moisture. As with all prescription medications, keep it out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Floxin?
Overdosing on Floxin may cause severe dizziness and other adverse effects. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do. If the person who overdosed has lost consciousness, seek emergency medical attention.
Warnings
If Floxin causes diarrhea, do not use any anti-diarrhea drugs without talking to your doctor. These medications may actually make your condition worse. Limit your alcohol consumption while taking Floxin, and do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you. If you are taking any medications that can bind to Floxin, take them at least two hours before or two hours after this antibiotic. Ask your doctor for a list of medicines that may interact with this drug. Avoid tanning beds and prolonged sun exposure, since Floxin can make you more sensitive to the sun.
Brand Names
Floxin is a brand name drug; its generic equivalent is ofloxacin. The generic form is usually less expensive, so ask your doctor if it’s possible to switch. If you do need to take brand name Floxin, get a coupon from HelpRx to reduce what you pay out of pocket.
