Renagel Information:

What is Renagel?

Healthy kidneys remove excess nutrients and other substances from the blood. Dialysis removes most excess potassium, but it is only able to eliminate small amounts of phosphorus. Excessive phosphorus can increase parathyroid hormone and cause problems in the bones. Renagel binds to phosphates consumed through diet and prevents them from being absorbed into the bloodstream in the first place.

How do I take Renagel?

Renagel comes in the form of a tablet that is to be swallowed. It is normally taken three times per day with meals. Try to take your medication at the same times every day. The required dosage will depend on your blood phosphorus levels. Always follow your doctors dosing instructions for Renagel tablets. Your doctor may also prescribe a diet low in phosphorus. Be sure you understand which foods not to eat.

Before taking Renagel, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Renagel tablets.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, including seizure medications, warfarin, lithium, heart or blood pressure medications, theophylline or cyclosporine.
  • You are taking any vitamins or supplements.
  • You are having trouble swallowing.
  • You’ve recently had surgery on your stomach or intestines.
  • You have or have had a bowel blockage.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking Renagel?

Renagel drug side effects include diarrhea, upset stomach, gas, constipation, vomiting, nausea and coughing. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that you should report immediately include abdominal pain or swelling, trouble breathing, chest pain, trouble with your dialysis access site, or swelling in the lower legs.

What if I forget to take a dose of Renagel?

If you forgot to take a dose of Renagel, and it is still within one hour since your last meal, take the missed dose. If it has been over an hour since your meal, skip the missed dose and then continue on your regular regimen. Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store Renagel?

Store Renagel tablets at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep them in an airtight container and protect them from moisture. Throw away any expired medication. Ask your pharmacist about the proper disposal of unused Renagel pills.

What happens if I overdose on Renagel?

There have been no reports of adverse effects from Renagel overdose. Volunteers in trials have taken up to 14 grams per day for 8 days with no adverse effects because Renagel is not absorbed by the body. If someone has taken an excessive amount of this medication, consult the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Renagel should not be taken by and is dangerous for patients with low phosphorus levels and those who have a bowel obstruction.
