Renvela Information:
What is Renvela?
Renvela is the brand name of the drug sevelamer, a phosphate binder and bile acid sequestrant that is prescribed to address high levels of phosphorus in patients with chronic kidney disease who are undergoing dialysis. It works by binding with the phosphorus found in foods and preventing it from entering the blood stream.
How do I take Renvela?
Renvela is administered in tablet form and taken orally three times a day with meals. In many cases, a doctor may have the patient adjust to a low phosphorus diet to improve the effects of the medication. Do not bite, crush, or chew the Renvela tablet.
Before taking Renvela, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to sevelamer or any of the ingredients in the Renvela tablet
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking medications for seizures
- You are taking, amiodarone, mexiletine, quinidine, or any medications to treat arrhythmia
- You are taking blood thinners, lithium, cyclosporine, or theophylline
- You have, or have had, bowel or stomach blockages, difficulty swallowing, or intestinal or stomach surgery
What are the possible side effects of taking Renvela?
Some patients have reported side effects after taking Renvela, including constipation, cough, diarrhea, flatulence, headache, upset stomach, and vomiting. If any of these symptoms or conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider for Renvela patient assistance.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, rash, severe itching, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
What if I forget to take a dose of Renvela?
Renvela is formulated to be taken with meals. If you forget to take a tablet, and it is within an hour of having eaten, take the missed tablet. However, if more than an hour has elapsed, skip the missed dose and resume the prescribed dosing regimen. Do not take multiple tablets to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Renvela?
Keep Renvela tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the in instructions of a doctor or pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Renvela?
If an overdose of Renvela is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for Renvela patient assistance. However, if the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Renvela. If you are taking other medications at the same time you are taking Renvela, adjust their dosing schedule in order to take them at least one hour before or three hours after taking Renvela; this prevents Renvela from binding with the other medications. Renvela will not cure your disease; continue taking the medication even if you feel well.
