Sylatron Information:
What is Sylatron?
Sylatron is an alpha interferon indicated for the treatment of melanoma with microscopic or gross nodal involvement. It should be administered no later than 84 days following surgery to help remove cancer-containing lymph nodes.
How do I take Sylatron?
Sylatron is administered subcutaneously (by injection) once a week. Your doctor may show you how to use injections at home. Do not self-inject if you do not fully understand how to give the injection. Be sure you understand how to store and properly mix the medicine. Do not allow a vial of Sylatron to be shaken, as it may lose its effectiveness. If the medicine has changed colors or has particles in it, do not use it. Call your pharmacist for new medicine.
Before taking Sylatron, tell your doctor if:
- You have cirrhosis, hepatitis B, or liver problems
- You have a history of depression, mental illness, suicidal thoughts, alcoholism, or drug addiction
- You have had an organ transplant
- You have or have had heart disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, or blood clot
- You have kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis)
- You have lung disease
- You have an autoimmune disorder such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or psoriasis
- You have a weak immune system caused by cancer or other conditions
- You have any blood cell disorder causing bleeding episodes, infections, or fever-related illness
- You have HIV or AIDS
- You have diabetes
- You have high triglycerides
- You have a thyroid disorder
- You have ulcerative colitis
What are the possible side effects of taking Sylatron?
Sylatron is associated with common side effects such as flu-like symptoms, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, weakness, feeling tired, mild depression or sadness, feeling anxious or irritable, thinning hair, or redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site. Tell a doctor at once if you experience vision loss, pale skin, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, sudden chest discomfort, wheezing, cough with mucus, severe stomach pain with bloody diarrhea, shortness of breath, numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your arms or legs, signs of infection, pancreas problems, high blood sugar, signs of a stroke or heart attack, new or worsened autoimmune disorder, thyroid problems, or worsening liver problems.
What if I forget to take a dose of Sylatron?
Use the medicine as soon as you remember the missed dose, then go back to your regular schedule. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Sylatron?
Store Sylatron at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit (15 and 30 degrees Celsius). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not reuse a used vial.
What happens if I overdose on Sylatron?
Contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or get to an emergency room as soon as possible if you suspect overdose.

Sylatron has profound effects on the body and can cause serious mood or behavior problems, life-threatening infections, autoimmune disorders, or a stroke.
