Tretinoin Information:

What is tretinoin?

Tretinoin is a retinoid and the carboxylic acid form of vitamin A. It works by acting on the RAR (retinoid acid) receptors that modify gene expression, protein synthesis, and epithelial cell growth. It increases cell generation and turnover to eliminate acne and help reduce wrinkles from photo aging. Tretinoin also stimulates collagen production. This medication has been used in the successful treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia, which affects red blood cells and platelets.

How do I take tretinoin?

Tretinoin may be prescribed by your dermatologist as a cream or gel to apply topically. Buy tretinoin in a pharmacy or at your dermatologist’s office. Those with acne may prefer the use of gel, as creams sometimes contain oils. Tretinoin cream or gel is usually applied to the face. First, gently wash your face with a mild soap and dry it. Wait 20 minutes or so for the face to dry completely before applying tretinoin. Apply a pea-sized amount to the affected area and rub it in evenly. If you are using the medication for your entire face, more than a pea-sized amount may be required. Avoid getting this medication near your eyes or in your ears, nostrils, lips and mouth. If you want to use tretinoin around the eyes, ask your dermatologist for a medication that is formulated for this sensitive area. Tretinoin can cause dry and scaly skin. Ask your dermatologist about using a moisturizer that you can apply after each application of this medication. Tretinoin is sometimes prescribed as an oral medication. If this is the case for you, follow instructions given to you by your doctor. High levels of vitamin A can be toxic, and your doctor will do routine testing to check your levels. Your acne may get worse before it starts to improve. It may take several weeks to see results.

Before taking tretinoin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast feeding.
  • You have eczema or other skin conditions that may be affected.
  • You are allergic to tretinoin or any of the ingredients in this medication.
  • Your skin is extremely sensitive to the sun.
  • You are using other skin medications such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.
  • You are taking other medications such as tetracycline or sulfa drugs.

What are the possible side effects of taking tretinoin?

Side effects from using tretinoin cream or gel include dry or scaly skin, redness and irritation at the site of application, increased sensitivity to the sun, mild stinging, and peeling skin.

What if I forget to take a dose of tretinoin?

If you miss an application of tretinoin, apply the medication as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not use two applications of tretinoin at once to make up for a missed dose. Do not use tretinoin for a longer time than specified by your doctor.

How do I store tretinoin?

Store tretinoin in its original tube or container. Keep it at a temperature between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and throw it away after it has expired. Keep tretinoin out of reach of children.

What happens if I overdose on tretinoin?

An overdose of tretinoin leads to increased side effects and may cause excessive irritation and peeling of the skin. If you think you have used too much tretinoin, contact your doctor or dermatologist.

Warnings

Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and eyewear, and avoid the sun as much as possible while using or taking tretinoin. Talk to your doctor about a reliable method of birth control that won’t interact with your medication. Do not get pregnant while using tretinoin as it can cause severe damage to the fetus.
