Uroxatral Information:
What is Uroxatral?
Uroxatral is the drug alfuzosin, an alpha-adrenergic blocker prescribed to treat the symptoms of BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) in men. It works by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder to facilitate urination.
How do I take Uroxatral?
Uroxatral is a pill that is taken orally once a day with water and immediately after a meal. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or split it open. This medication does not cure BPH, and you should continue taking it even if you feel well. Do not discontinue this drug without first speaking with your doctor.
Before taking Uroxatral, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to alfuzosin or any of the ingredients in the Uroxatral drug
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have, have had, or there is a family history of arrhythmia, tachycardia, or bradycardia
- You are having cataract surgery
- You have liver disease or kidney disease
- You have heart disease or angina
- You have hypotension (low blood pressure)
- You have or have had prostate cancer
- You have ever fainted, become dizzy, or had low pressure after taking medication
What are the possible side effects of taking Uroxatral?
Mild side effects can include constipation, diminished sexual performance, headache, heartburn, nausea, pain, a runny or stuffed nose; sore throat, fever, chills, cough or other symptoms of an infection; stomach pain; tiredness. If any of these conditions last a long time or get worse, contact your healthcare provider. Cal your doctor right away if you experience severe chest pain or fainting.
What if I forget to take a dose of Uroxatral?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Uroxatral, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip it and return to the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Uroxatral?
Keep Uroxatral tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Uroxatral?
If an overdose of Uroxatral is suspected, contact your local Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, call 911. Signs of an overdose may include nausea, blurred vision, dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting.
Warnings
Uroxatral is not for use by women. Uroxatral may cause orthostatic hypotension. This medication may make you dizzy, drowsy, or cause fainting; do not drive or perform other tasks that require alertness until its effects are known. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit while taking Uroxatral.
