What is Viberzi?
Viberzi is an opioid receptor agonist. It treats irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea by causing the intestines to slow the movement of food during digestion.
How do I take Viberzi?
Take Viberzi exactly as prescribed by your doctor. This medication can be addictive, so never take extra doses or use it for longer than directed. Doses are usually taken twice daily with food. Tell your doctor if your IBS symptoms do not improve or worsen after you start using Viberzi regularly.
Before taking Viberzi, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs, supplements, or vitamins (especially Lotronex or opioid pain medicines)
- You have an intestinal blockage or severe constipation
- You have a muscle valve problem called sphincter of Oddi
- You have a history of gallbladder obstruction or your gallbladder has been removed
- You have liver disease
- You have pancreas disorder
- You regularly have more than three alcoholic drinks per day
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Viberzi?
The most commonly reported side effects of Viberzi include abdominal pain, nausea, and constipation. If your constipation lasts more than four days, stop taking the Viberzi drug and call your doctor. You should also stop using this medicine and call your doctor if you experience new or worsening stomach pain or vomiting.
What if I forget to take a dose of Viberzi?
If you forget a dose, skip it and make sure to take your next dose at the normal time. Don’t take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Viberzi?
Store Viberzi in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. Always keep it out of reach of children and pets. This medication may be a target for those who have a history of substance abuse, so keep it in a secure location. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, talk to your pharmacist to determine how to safely dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on Viberzi?

Warnings

Viberzi is currently only available as a brand name drug. There aren’t any other opioid agonist/antagonist medications that are specifically used to treat IBS with diarrhea.
