Xalatan Information:
What is Xalatan?
Xalatan is the brand name for the ophthalmic solution of the drug latanoprost, a prostaglandin antiglaucoma drug prescribed to treat certain types of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It relieves pressure by increasing the volume of fluid that flows from the eye. It does not cure glaucoma; continue to use it even if you are feeling better. If your condition has not improved after using Xalatan for a few days, contact your doctor.
How do I take Xalatan?
Xalatan is instilled into the eye using an eye dropper; if you have never used this medication, ask your doctor or healthcare provider to demonstrate. When applying the drops yourself, thoroughly wash your hands both before and application. Remove contact lenses if you are wearing them. Tilt back your head or lie down and pull down the lower eyelid, forming a pocket. Holding the dropper tip down and without touching the eye, squeeze the bottle to dispense the prescribed number of drops into this pouch. Avoid letting the drops come in direct contact with the eyeball. Without blinking, close your eyes and gently press against the lid for several minutes to ensure the medication stays in place. Wipe off any excess liquid. If you are using other ophthalmic solutions, wait five minutes between applications.
Before taking Xalatan, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to latanoprost or any of the ingredients in Xalatan
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins or supplements
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You have an inflammation of the eye
- You have, or have had, kidney or liver disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Xalatan?
Some individuals have reported side effects after using Xalatan. Less severe conditions include dry eyes, eye irritation, reddened eyelids, or stinging, burning, itching, watering, or swelling of the eye. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, rash, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, mouth, throat, or tongue.
What if I forget to take a dose of Xalatan?
If you forget to instill your scheduled dose of Xalatan, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount used or change the dosing frequency to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Xalatan?
Keep Xalatan tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow the Xalatan liquid to freeze. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Xalatan?
If the Xalatan drug is accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or has lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using Xalatan. This medication may increase the brown pigmentation in the eyes, or cause eyelashes to thicken or grow longer. Contact your doctor if you notice any changes to the eye in which Xalatan is instilled. Remove contacts before instilling this medication.
