Zohydro Er Information:
What is Zohydro ER?
Zohydro ER is an extended release opioid, prescribed to those who require constant management of severe pain; this medication is not for use on an as needed basis. It works by blocking pain signals to the brain; extended-release medications are formulated to provide an immediate dose of some of the medication, with the remainder entering the bloodstream periodically over time. It is possible that dependency issues can develop when taking this medication over an extended period. Zohydro ER is classified as a Schedule II narcotic.
How do I take Zohydro ER?
Zohydro ER is an extended-release capsule that is taken orally twice a day (every 12 hours), with water and without regard for food. Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush, break, dissolve, or chew. Over time, your doctor may increase or decrease the dosage strength. Do not stop taking Zohydro ER without first consulting with your physician.
Before taking Zohydro ER, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to hydrocodone or any of the ingredients in the Zohydro ER capsules
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have taken, at any time within the past two weeks, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, rasagiline, selegiline, or isocarboxazid
- You are taking citalopram, butorphanol, pentazocine, amiodarone, levofloxacin, antihistamines, nalbuphine, azithromycin, haloperidol, chlorpromazine, dronedarone, tranquillizers, sedatives or sleeping pills
- You are taking muscle relaxants, medications for seizures, mental illness, anxiety, Parkinson disease, urinary problems, irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, or ulcers, or you are taking other narcotic medications
- You are taking medications to treat HIV/AIDS, erythromycin, laxatives, antifungals, carbamazepine, cimetidine, clarithromycin, rifampin, or phenytoin
- You have, or have had, seizures, or a head injury
- You have, or have had, lung diseases or conditions such as COPD or asthma;
- You have, or have had, hypertension, hypotension, arrhythmia, bradycardia, tachycardia, heart disease, or heart failure
- You have, or have had, colon cancer, any narrowing or blockage of the stomach or intestines, paralytic ileus, esophageal cancer, or difficulty swallowing
- You have, or have had problems urinating, kidney disease, thyroid disease, a disease of the pancreas, gall bladder disease, or liver disease.
What are the possible side effects of taking Zohydro ER?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Zohydro ER. Less severe symptoms include problems sleeping, back pain, stomach pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, difficult or painful urination, dry mouth, changes in urination frequency, swelling of feet, legs, or ankles, loss of appetite, tinnitus, muscle tightening, tiredness, or uncontrollable trembling. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects that require immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; hoarseness, difficulty breathing or swallowing), chest pain, and heart rhythm problems.
What if I forget to take a dose of Zohydro ER?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose Zohydro ER, skip it and take the next dose at its scheduled time. Do not take more than one dose of Zohydro ER in a twelve-hour period and do not change the schedule to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Zohydro ER?
Keep Zohydro ER capsules tightly sealed in their original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Zohydro ER?
If an overdose of Zohydro ER is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include a slowed heart rate, slowed breathing, sleepiness, constricted or dilated pupils, muscle weakness, cold or clammy skin, coma, and death.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Zohydro ER. This medication may make you drowsy; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Sudden discontinuation of this drug may result in symptoms of severe withdrawal.
