What is Afinitor?
Afinitor is a type of drug known as a kinase inhibitor. It helps treat certain types of cancers and tumors by decreasing immune system activity and slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells. It is most commonly prescribed for kidney cancer, breast cancer, pancreas cancer, and benign tumors in the brain or kidney.
How do I take Afinitor?
Afinitor comes as a tablet and is usually taken once a day, with or without food. Once you start using it, take it at the same time and the same way every day (i.e. if you started taking it with food, always take it with food). Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully, and contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any additional questions about how to take this medication.
Before taking Afinitor, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements, especially an ACE inhibitor
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You currently have an infection or have chronic infections
- You have high cholesterol or triglycerides
- You have high blood sugar or diabetes
- You are scheduled to receive a live vaccine
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or think you may be pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Afinitor?
Common side effects of the Afinitor drug include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, nose bleeds, mouth sores, temporary hair loss, and dry skin. These are not all the possible side effects, and you should always let your doctor know if you have any side effects that concern you or last a long time. Stop taking Afinitor and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects: swollen hands or feet, changes in menstrual bleeding, unusual mental or mood changes, easy bruising or bleeding, severe fatigue, chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of a new infection, or signs of kidney or liver problems.
What if I forget to take a dose of Afinitor?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it, unless you have forgotten the dose for over 6 hours. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule.
How do I store Afinitor?
Store Afinitor at room temperature, out of reach of any children or pets in your home. Do not store it in the bathroom, as bright light and moisture can negatively affect it. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to dispose of it safely.
What happens if I overdose on Afinitor?
Overdosing on Afinitor may cause severe side effects. If you think that you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical attention.
Warnings
Afinitor may cause dizziness, so avoid driving or engaging in other activities that require clear focus until you know how the medication affects you. This drug may compromise your immune system, so avoid coming into contact with anyone who has an infection or has recently received a live vaccine while you are taking Afinitor. You should not receive a live vaccine while on this medicine. You should also try to avoid situations where you could be bruised or cut, since taking Afinitor may cause you to bruise or bleed more easily. Do not drink alcoholic beverages or eat grapefruit while taking this drug, as this increases your risk of side effects. If you have a caregiver, make sure they know you are taking Afinitor, since the medication can pass into bodily fluids and cause adverse effects for anyone who comes into contact with those fluids.
Brand Names
Afinitor is a brand name drug containing the active ingredient everolimus. There is currently no generic equivalent, although there is another brand name form of everolimus called Zortress. The Zortress drug is used to prevent organ rejection after a kidney transplant, rather than being used to treat cancer.
