What is Carbatrol?

Carbatrol is the drug carbamazepine, an anticonvulsant prescribed to treat certain types of seizures in those with epilepsy. It may also be prescribed to those with diabetic nerve pain, trigeminal neuralgia, mental illness, PTSD, depression, RLS, chorea, diabetes insipidus, or for treating drug or alcohol withdrawal. Carbatrol works by reducing abnormal electrical activity and nerve impulses in the brain that cause seizures and pain.

How do I take Carbatrol?

Carbatrol is dispensed as a capsule and taken orally twice a day with water, with or without food. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, discuss with your doctor an acceptable method for taking the medication; do not crush or chew the capsules or the beads inside the capsule. Your doctor may change the dosage strength over time. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Carbatrol without first notifying your doctor.

Before taking Carbatrol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to carbamazepine, amitriptyline, amoxapine, clomipramine, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, nortriptyline, trimipramine, protriptyline, other medications for seizures, or any of the ingredients in Carbatrol
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, including St. John’s wort
  • You are taking, or have taken in the last two weeks, MAOIs or any medication containing carbamazepine
  • You are taking lithium, levothyroxine, isoniazid, haloperidol, felodipine, erythromycin, doxycycline, doxorubicin, diltiazem, delavirdine, danazol, dalfopristin, cyclosporine, clozapine, clonazepam, clarithromycin, cisplatin, cimetidine, Alprazolam, acetazolamide, acetaminophen, zileuton, verapamil, troleandomycin, tramadol, theophylline, rifampin, quinupristin, quinine, propoxyphene, praziquantel, niacinamide, nefazodone, methadone, lorazepam, or loratadine
  • You are taking anticoagulants, HIV protease inhibitors, sedatives, antidepressants, tranquilizers, antifungals, sleeping pills, or medications to treat malaria, anxiety, mental illness or seizures
  • You have, or have had, psychosis, glaucoma, or thyroid, heart, liver, or kidney disease
  • You are having any type of surgery, including dental

What are the possible side effects of taking Carbatrol?

Some people have reported side effects after taking Carbatrol. Less severe symptoms include anxiety, agitation, back pain, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, heartburn, memory problems, nausea, unsteadiness, or vomiting. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider for Carbatrol patient assistance.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), chest pain, confusion or loss of contact with reality, vision problems, or symptoms of jaundice.

What if I forget to take a dose of Carbatrol?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of the Carbatrol drug, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of capsules taken or change the regimen to make up for a missed dose.

How do I store Carbatrol?

Keep Carbatrol tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Carbatrol?

If an overdose of Carbatrol is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911 for Carbatrol patient assistance. Indications of an overdose include abnormal movements, blurred vision, problems urinating, dizziness, drowsiness, irregular or slowed breathing, muscle twitches, nausea, tachycardia, restlessness, seizures, uncontrollable bodily tremors, unsteadiness, and vomiting.

Warnings

Carbatrol may cause the life-threatening allergic reactions toxic epidermal necrolysis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome; it may also reduce the number of blood cells produced by the body. This medication may induce thoughts of suicide or cause suicidal actions. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. If you are taking Carbatrol for a seizure disorder and suddenly discontinue its use, the seizures may become worse. This medication may make you drowsy or dizzy; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Do not take other medications that contain carbamazepine while taking Carbatrol. This medication may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Drinking alcohol can exacerbate the side effects.
