Combivir Information:
What is Combivir?
Combivir is a combination drug containing the medications lamivudine and zidovudine. It is an NRTI (nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor) that is prescribed, along with other medications, to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Combivir works by preventing HIV cells from reproducing in order to decrease the amount of the virus in the blood.
How do I take Combivir?
Combivir is administered in tablet form and taken orally twice a day with water and without regard for food. The exact dosing regimen will be determined by your doctor; follow the prescription instructions exactly. Combivir controls but does not cure HIV infection; continue taking this medication even if you feel well. Do not stop taking it without notifying your doctor.
Before taking Combivir, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to lamivudine, zidovudine, or any of the ingredients in Combivir
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

- You have, or have had, anemia, blood marrow problems, or any blood disorders
- You have or have had muscle diseases or disorders
- You have, or have had, liver or kidney disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Combivir?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Combivir. Less severe symptoms include constipation, cough, depression, diarrhea, sleep difficulties, dizziness, excessive tiredness, loss of hair, headache, appetite loss, stuffy nose, or an upset stomach. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing); wheezing; numb, tingling, or burning in toes or fingers; foul-smelling or fatty stools; unusual bleeding or bruising; symptoms of jaundice; sore throat; pale skin; chills.
What if I forget to take a dose of Combivir?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Combivir, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of tablets taken or change the schedule to make up for one that was missed.
How do I store Combivir?
Keep the Combivir drug tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused doses according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Combivir?
If an overdose of Combivir is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
