Triumeq Information:

What is Triumeq?

Triumeq is a combination drug containing abacavir, dolutegravir, and lamivudine. It treats HIV by reducing the amount of HIV-1 and increasing the number of white blood cells in the bloodstream, which helps strengthen the immune system and reduce the likelihood of getting future infections. It is not a cure for HIV or AIDs, nor will it prevent the spread of HIV to other people. Talk to your doctor about other precautions to take.

How do I take Triumeq?

Take Triumeq and all other HIV medications exactly as your doctor has prescribed them. Do not stop taking your medication or change your dosage schedule without first talking to your doctor. Triumeq tablets can be taken with or without food.

Before taking Triumeq, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Triumeq, or you have any other allergies
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements, especially any other drugs containing abacavir, lamivudine, or emtricitabine
  • Have a gene variation of HIV known as HLA-B*5701 (your doctor should test you for this)
  • You have any heart, kidney, or liver problems (especially hepatitis B or C)
  • You regularly drink alcohol
  • You have risk factors for heart disease
  • You are breastfeeding or pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Triumeq?

The most commonly reported side effects of Triumeq are headache, difficulty sleeping, and daytime tiredness. Let your doctor know if you have any side effects that persist or worsen, or if you have any signs of a new or worsening infection. Call your doctor immediately if you have nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, upper stomach pain, jaundice, urine or stool of an unusual color, loss of appetite, or jaundice. Get emergency medical attention if you have any signs of a heart attack.

What if I forget to take a dose of Triumeq?

It is very important that you take Triumeq on a regular schedule. If you do forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If there are less than four hours until your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Never double your dose, and do not let yourself run out of Triumeq before refilling your prescription.

How do I store Triumeq?

Keep Triumeq away from bright light and moisture. Store it at room temperature, in a tightly-sealed container out of reach of children and pets. If your medication has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on Triumeq?

If you or someone in your household overdoses on Triumeq, go to the nearest emergency room or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings
There are certain medications you should not take within six hours before or two hours after Triumeq. These include buffered medicines, calcium or iron supplements, Carafate, and antacids or laxatives containing aluminum or magnesium. Ask your doctor for a complete list, and be sure to discuss all your current medications to make sure you aren’t take anything that will have a harmful interaction with the Triumeq drug. Pay attention to any side effects you experience while taking Triumeq, as symptoms of an allergic reaction may mean that you can no longer take this medication. Your doctor will give you a Warning Card listing the possible symptoms of an allergic reaction.
