What is Dificid?
Dificid is an antibiotic used to treat Clostridium difficile, a bacterial infection in the bowels that causes diarrhea. It works by killing the bacteria causing the infection. It is not effective in treating viral infections, such as colds or flu.
How do I take Dificid?
Dificid is taken by mouth with or without food (although if you have a sensitive stomach, it may be best to take the Dificid drug with a snack or meal). Most people who need this medication take one tablet twice daily for ten days, but defer to your doctor if he or she has given you different dosage instructions.
Before taking Dificid, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication or any other antibiotics
- You have any other known allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Dificid?
Most people take the Dificid drug without experiencing any serious side effect. However, some people have reported nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, abdominal tenderness, bloating, or constipation. If you experience these or any other side effects, they may go away as your body adjusts to the medication. However, you should notify your doctor right away if your side effects persist or worsen, or if you have any of the following rare but serious side effects: fever, chills, mouth sores, lightheadedness, difficulty breathing, flushed skin, difficulty concentrating, bloody stools, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
What if I forget to take a dose of Dificid?
If you forget a dose of the Dificid drug, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and continue your normal dosage schedule. Do not take more Dificid tablets than you have been prescribed in an effort to catch up.
How do I store Dificid?
Keep Dificid at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. It is okay for this medicine to be kept at 59 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit for short periods of time, but keep it away from bright light and moisture. As with any prescription medication, you should keep the Dificid drug in a tightly sealed container out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Dificid?
Overdosing on Dificid can be dangerous. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room if you or someone in your household has overdosed.
Warnings
Take Dificid exactly as prescribed and continue taking the full course of medication, even if you feel better. Skipping doses puts you at a greater risk for getting future infections with antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
