Cortisporin Information:
What is Cortisporin?
Cortisporin is an anti-microbial, anti-bacterial topical medication prescribed to treat bacterial infections of the ears, eyes, and skin; it is not used to treat viral infections. Cortisporin is a combination of hydrocortisone, polymixin, and neomycin that works by eliminating bacteria to relieve itching, inflammation, redness, and pain, and is dispensed as either a solution for treating the ears or as a cream or ointment to treat other areas.
How do I take Cortisporin?
Cortisporin is a topical medication, applied externally to an affected area. The amount used and frequency of use will depend on the condition being treated and the medical profile of the individual. Follow the dosing instructions exactly. If using the ear drops, have your healthcare provider demonstrate the proper procedure. When using the cream or ointment, do not bandage the area or use cosmetics without medical permission.
Before taking Cortisporin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to hydrocortisone, neomycin, polymixin, or any of the ingredients in Cortisporin
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have diabetes
- You have had a heart attack
- You have kidney disease
- You have cataracts
- You have glaucoma
- You have a circulatory or immune system disorder of the immune system
- You have a perforated ear drum
What are the possible side effects of taking Cortisporin?
Some individuals have reported symptoms of an allergic reaction (hives, severe rash, wheezing, difficulty breathing or swallowing) after using Cortisporin; if these appear, seek medical help immediately. Mild side effects have also been reported. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following and they persist or worsen: acne, blurred vision, burning, change in skin color, dry or cracked skin, hearing problems, itching, pain, or swelling.
What if I forget to take a dose of Cortisporin?
If you forget to apply or instill your scheduled dose of Cortisporin, do so as soon as you remember and are able. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one missed and resume the original schedule. Do not increase the amount used or alter the schedule to make up for a dose that was missed.
How do I store Cortisporin?
Keep Cortisporin tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not allow the medication to freeze. Dispose of any expired or unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist or healthcare provider.
What happens if I overdose on Cortisporin?
Cortisporin is for topical use only. If it is accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
Warnings
Cortisporin is for external use only. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication.
