FML Information:
What is FML?
FML is a corticosteroid drug. It helps reduce eye inflammation due to injury, surgery, infection, or other medical conditions.
How do I use FML?
Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid of the affected eye when preparing to use the FML medicine. If you’re using the liquid form of this medication, gently squeeze one drop into your eye while looking up and away. Close your eye for at least two minutes while holding a finger against the inside corner of the eye to keep the medicine from leaking out. If your doctor has instructed you to apply more than one drop to the same eye, wait at least five minutes before applying the next one. If you’re using the ointment form of this medication, squeeze a small amount of ointment into your lower eyelid pocket, blink gently, and close your eye for at least a minute. Wipe away any excess ointment with a tissue.
Before using FML, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any steroid medications or have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially another steroid medication
- You have a fungal or viral eye infection
- You have any other kind of untreated infection
- You have tuberculosis
- You have a history of glaucoma, cataracts, or other eye problems
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of using FML?
You may experience mild stinging, burning, or other irritation when first applying FML to your eye. Other common side effects include temporarily blurred vision, drooping or puffy eyelids, or feeling like you have something in your eye. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor. Serious side effects are rare, but contact your doctor right away if you experience sudden weight gain, changes in your menstrual period, increased body hair growth, thinning skin, slow wound healing, muscle weakness, or unusual mood changes, as these may be signs that the FML medicine has been absorbed into your bloodstream. Stop using FML and call your doctor immediately if your eye condition worsens, or if you have pain behind your eyes, sudden eye irritation or vision changes, severe headache, or signs of a new eye infection.
What if I forget to use a dose of FML?
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule. Don’t apply more of the drops or ointment than you normally would for a single dose.
How do I store FML?
Store your eye dropper bottle or tube of ointment in a dry space at room temperature. Make sure the medication is tightly sealed and out of reach of any children or pets in your home. Keep the eye dropper bottle upright, and discard any leftover solution four weeks after you have opened the bottle (or if you notice any floating particles or discoloration of the liquid before then). If you’re not sure how to safely dispose of the FML drug, talk to your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on FML?
It is not likely that an overdose of FML will be life-threatening, but if you believe that you or someone in your household has used too much of this medicine, or if someone has accidentally ingested some of the solution or ointment, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do.
Warnings
Because the FML drug can cause dizziness or temporary vision changes, you should be careful driving and performing tasks that require clear vision until you know you can do so safely. Do not wear contact lenses during your treatment with FML unless your doctor has given you permission to do so. Even if your doctor does give you permission to wear contacts, you should remove them while you are applying the FML solution or ointment and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in. Do not use other eye medications during your treatment without first consulting your doctor.
Brand Names
FML is a brand name drug. Fluorometholone is its generic equivalent. The generic form is usually less expensive, so ask your doctor if it’s possible to switch. If you do need brand name FML, remember to get a coupon from our site to substantially reduce what you pay out of pocket.
