Hydroxyurea Information:
Hydroxyurea is a chemotherapy drug prescribed for the treatment of myeloid leukemia, ovarian cancer, and squamous cell cancer in the head and neck. It can also be prescribed to reduce pain and blood transfusions in sickle cell anemia patients.
Follow all the instructions on the prescription label and do not take larger or smaller dosages than recommended. Drink 8-10 glasses of fluid daily while taking hydroxyurea. Depending on your condition, this medication is taken daily or every third day. Take it at the same time each day you take it. You should wash your hands before taking hydroxyurea and wear disposable gloves for optimal protection. If the capsule opens, dispose of any of the contents and rinse any affected skin with water and soap.
Before taking hydroxyurea, tell your doctor if:
· You have bone marrow suppression or anemia
· You have low levels of platelets in your blood
· You have a history of skin cancer
· You have high levels of uric acid in your blood
· You have HIV or AIDS
· You have kidney or liver disease
· You have a pancreas disorder
· You are receiving chemotherapy or radiation
· You have any food or drug allergies
· You are taking any other medications, vitamins, or supplements
· You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy
Common side effects include bleeding, loss of appetite, upset stomach, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, skin peeling or itching, mild rash, hair loss, darkening of nails, headache, dizziness, and swelling in hands or feet. Call your doctor at once if you have skin numbness or purple discoloration, skin ulcers or open sores, painful or difficult urination, numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your hands or feet; signs of a weak immune system, pancreas problems, or liver problems.
You should take the missed dose of hydroxyurea as you as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose. Don’t take any extra medication to make up for a missed dosage.
Store this medication at room temperature away from any moisture or heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not using it.
In the event of a hydroxyurea drug overdose, you should seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. Symptoms of an overdose may include drowsiness, mouth sores, and swelling with pain and purple discoloration in the hands and feet.
