What is Hyzaar?
Hyzaar contains a combination of two different types of blood pressure medications: losartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker that works by blocking the effects of angiotensin II, a hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict. Blocking this hormone causes blood vessels to widen which decreases blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic that causes the body to eliminate excess fluids through urination. This reduces blood plasma volume which also reduces blood pressure.
How do I take Hyzaar?
Hyzaar comes in the form of a tablet, and it should be taken once daily, ideally in the mornings or early afternoon. Your doctor will prescribe the right dose to help you maintain regular blood pressure. Try to take your medication at the same time every day, and always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions.
Before taking Hyzaar, tell your doctor if:
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have diabetes.
- You have lupus.
- You have diarrhea or you could possibly be dehydrated.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Hyzaar medicine.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, including other blood pressure medications, potassium supplements, lithium, diuretics, salt substitutes, NSAIDs and arthritis drugs.
What are the possible side effects of taking Hyzaar?
All medications have side effects. Some common side effects from taking Hyzaar include dizziness, stuffy nose, back pain, low blood pressure and upper respiratory infections. If any of these side effects are persistent or severe, tell your doctor. Some side effects can be serious and should be reported immediately. These include fainting, excessively low blood pressure, decrease in vision, eye pain, swelling of the hands, feet or ankles; and signs of new or worsening lupus.
What if I forget to take a dose of Hyzaar?
If you forget to take a dose of Hyzaar, take the missed pill as soon as you remember it. If it’s near the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Never take double doses to compensate for missed ones.
How do I store Hyzaar?
Store Hyzaar medicine at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep it in a tightly closed container to protect it from moisture. Keep this medication out of direct light and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Hyzaar?
Signs of Hyzaar overdose may include dehydration, low blood pressure, fast or irregular heartbeat and slow breathing. If the victim is not breathing or is unresponsive, call 911. For more information, all the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Do not take Hyzaar if you are pregnant. Losartan can cause serious injury to a fetus that can be fatal. Hyzaar can cause dizziness. Get up slowly from a reclining position after you take your medication, and do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it will affect you.
