Jolivette Information:

What is Jolivette?

Jolivette is a low-dose, progestin-only hormonal contraceptive that contains a form of progestin called norethindrone. Unlike regular combination birth control pills, Jolivette doesn’t inhibit ovulation in everyone. It only stops ovulation in approximately half of users; however, it does thicken cervical mucous, slows the movement of the egg, and changes the endometrial lining, thus preventing pregnancy. If this contraceptive is used perfectly according to instructions, it is 99.5% effective. On average, it is 95% effective.

How do I take Jolivette?

In order to prevent pregnancy, it is very important to take Jolivette pills at the same time every day. Pick a time of day that is easiest for you to remember. It is best to start your firs pack of Jolivette on the first day of your period. If you are switching to Jolivette from a regular birth control, start the pack of Jolivette after you take the last active pill in the pack. Continue to take one pill per day until the pack is finished, then start a new pack.

Before taking Jolivette, tell your doctor if:

  • You have or have ever had breast cancer.
  • You have liver disease or liver cancer.
  • You have frequently forgotten to take your birth control pill on time in the past.
  • You are pregnant or think you might be pregnant
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Jolivette pills.
  • You are experiencing abnormal vaginal bleeding or spotting.
  • You regularly smoke cigarettes.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, including seizure medications, HIV or AIDS medications and tuberculosis drugs.

What are the possible side effects of taking Jolivette?

Side effects from taking Jolivette include nausea, vomiting, headache, bloating, breast tenderness, spotting and weight gain. These side effects should lessen over time. If any of these side effects are severe, or if you throw up within an hour after taking your pill, call your doctor and ask what to do. Serious but rare side effects that you should report to your doctor immediately include heavy vaginal bleeding, yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, depression, breast lumps or migraine headaches.

What if I forget to take a dose of Jolivette?

If you forget to take one of your Jolivette pills, take the missed pill as soon as you remember. You will need to use a back-up birth control method, such as a condom, for 48 hours. If you miss more than one pill, call your doctor and ask what to do.

How do I store Jolivette?

Store Jolivette in a place where it is easy for you to remember to take your pills on time. Keep the pills at a temperature around 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit and keep them out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Jolivette?

There have been no reports of serious adverse effects from Jolivette overdose. Signs of overdose might be similar to side effects. If you or someone you know has overdosed on Jolivette, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 and ask how to proceed.

Warnings

Smoking cigarettes while taking birth control can increase the risk of developing serious adverse effects. Jolivette has a lower prevention success rate than combination birth control pills because it must be taken exactly on time. Jolivette does not protect against the transmission of STDs.
