Levetiracetam Information:
What is levetiracetam?
As an anticonvulsant medicine, levetiracetam decreases abnormal activity in the brain which causes epileptic seizures in children and adults, including partial onset seizures, tonic-clonic seizures, and myoclonic seizures. In some cases, treatment may start for children as young as one month, however, this will vary based on the type of seizure and patient medical history. Levetiracetam only treats symptoms of epilepsy and cannot cure it.
How do I take levetiracetam?
Always follow your doctor's instructions closely, and remember that dosing is partly determined by age and weight. Levetiracetam is a drug that's available in three forms: oral solution, tablet, and extended-release capsule. (In a hospital setting, it may also be administered intravenously.) The extended-release capsules are taken by mouth one time daily, with or without food, and the tablet and oral solution are taken by mouth two times daily. The oral solution should always be measured out with a dose measuring cup, but the appropriate dose can be diluted with water if needed. Never cut, crush, open, or chew extended-release capsules. Consult your doctor before cutting tablets. Do not suddenly stop taking your medication, as it increases your risk of seizure. Always make sure to fill your next prescription before your current one is finished.
Before taking levetiracetam, tell your doctor if:
- you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant or breastfeed
- you cannot get consistent access to medication for any reason
- you are or have a history of being depressed or suicidal
- you have or have a history of mental or mood disorders, including psychosis
- you have or have a history of kidney disease or disorder
- you regularly drink alcohol or are an alcoholic
- you are taking any other drugs, medicines, supplements, or vitamins, especially if they affect the kidneys
What are the possible side effects of taking levetiracetam?
Common side effects do not need medical attention unless they persist or worsen. These include mild dizziness, drowsiness, infection, and weakness. However, serious and severe side effects require your doctor's attention, and may require immediate medical aid. These include: agitation, anxiety or panic attacks, unusual changes in behavior, unexplained bruises, burning in your eyes, confusion, cold or flu-like symptoms, depression, unusual or extreme drowsiness, fever, hallucinations, hostility, hyperactivity, irritability, loss of coordination or balance, muscle weakness, unusual numbness, mouth or skin sores, severe tingling, sore throat, skin pain, signs of skin rash even if mild, red or purple skin rash that spreads to your upper body with blistering and peeling, swollen gums, trouble breathing.
What if I forget to take a dose of levetiracetam?
Never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you can take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.
How do I store levetiracetam?
Keep this medication at room temperature, away from excess moisture and heat. The oral solution should be kept away from light and should never be frozen. Do not use the oral solution if it's discolored or has particles in it.
What happens if I overdose on levetiracetam?
Symptoms of overdose include: unusual aggression or agitation, extreme drowsiness or feeling as though you may faint, difficulty breathing or shallow breathing, sudden weakness. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate emergency medical attention.
Warnings
This medication can alter your thinking or mood, and in some cases, it can cause suicidal ideations, especially in teens. If you're taking this medication, ensure that responsible people around you know what signs to watch for. Do not do things like drive or operate machinery until you know how levetiracetam will affect you. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication, as it exacerbates certain side effects and increases your risk of seizure. Your doctor may want to want to test your blood often to check levetiracetam's effect on your kidneys. Keep all lab and doctor appointments. Tell all medical personnel that will treat you that you're taking this medication. It's strongly recommended you utilize a medical ID bracelet or tag in case of emergencies. Be sure your doctor knows about all medications you take, and you should not change your doses or dosing schedule without consulting with them. There is a high potential for drug-drug interactions, and may increase your risk of seizure or adverse effects. Never suddenly stop taking levetiracetam, as it will exacerbate side effects and greatly increase your risk of seizure. If you become pregnant while using this medication, do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor. It's important to control your seizures while pregnant, so you need to determine a plan of action with your doctor.
