What is Lomedia 24 Fe?
Lomedia 24 Fe (ethinyl estradiol/norethindrone acetate/ferrous fumarate) is a combination oral contraceptive taken for 24 days, with a following 4 placebo pills containing iron. It is most often prescribed to prevent pregnancy, and is considered a generic equivalent to Loestrin 24 Fe. It works by suppressing gonadotropins, which inhibits ovulation and makes changes to the cervical mucus and endometrium.
How do I take Lomedia 24 Fe?
Always follow the instructions you receive from your doctor or pharmacist, or the instructions that come with your medication. Take 1 pill daily, at the same time every day, with or without food. Be sure to refill your prescription before you finish taking the placebo pills; oral contraception is only fully effective when taken consistently.
Before taking Lomedia 24 Fe, tell your doctor if:
• You are currently taking any other drugs, medications, supplements, or vitamins.
• You are breastfeeding.
• You smoke.
• You have previously had a poor or allergic reaction to estrogen, progestins, or other hormones.
• You have or have a history of blood clots, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol, lupus, migraines, or heart attack or stroke.
• You have or have a history of gallbladder, heart, kidney, or liver diseases, disorders, or problems.
• You have recently had or have a history of abnormal vaginal bleeding.
• You have or have a history of PCOS.
What are the possible side effects of taking Lomedia 24 Fe?
Some severe side effects can be associated with this medication. If you experience any of the following, seek emergency medical assistance immediately: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives and itching, swelling in the face/lips/tongue/throat), confusion, trouble speaking or thinking, feeling unusually dizzy or lightheaded, loss of balance and coordination, migraines or severe headache (especially if sudden), pain in the groin or limbs, numb or weak feeling in the limbs or face, chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, breast pain or discharge, coughing up blood, stomach pain or tenderness of the upper abdomen, vomiting, jaundice, unusual changes in vaginal bleeding, unusual vaginal discharge or signs of vaginal infection.
Common side effects include: acne or other skin blemishes, breakthrough bleeding or spotting, breast tenderness, slight weight gain, sensitivity to sunlight, nausea, mood changes (anxiety, depression, irritability, outbursts).
What if I forget to take a dose of Lomedia 24 Fe?
Oral contraception is only fully effective if you consistently take it, and will become less effective with every white pill missed. If you miss 1 white pill, take it as soon as you remember it. Continue to take your next dose on time.
If you miss 2 white Lomedia pills in a row in Week 1 or Week 2, take 2 pills on the day you remember, and 2 pills the next day. Use back up birth control for the next 7 days, and continue taking the rest of this prescription pack as usual.
If you miss 2 white Lomedia pills in a row in Week 3 or Week 4, consult the instructions about when to throw away the pack you have and how to start a new one. You will need to use back up birth control until 7 days after you restart your medication. If you have had sex during the time you missed your doses, consult your doctor regarding taking Plan B. Note: If you miss your period twice in a row, consult your doctor as you may be pregnant.
How do I store Lomedia 24 Fe?
Store Lomedia 24 Fe at room temperature and out of the reach of children. Discard if expired.
What happens if I overdose on Lomedia 24 Fe?
Lomedia overdose may result in nausea and unusual menstrual bleeding. Call your local poison control center or seek medical assistance.
Warnings
Lomedia 24 Fe will not protect against, prevent, or otherwise treat or cure sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS.
You may become more sensitive to sunlight while taking Lomedia 24 Fe. Avoid tanning lamps and booths, and be sure to use sunscreen or cover up when you cannot avoid direct sunlight. Do not smoke while taking this medication, as it increases your risk of blood clot or stroke.
You may retain water and your blood pressure may rise while taking this medication. Consult your doctor.
Use back up birth control when taking the first pack of Lomedia 24 Fe, or when multiple pills have been missed. You may notice vision changes or swelling and tenderness in the gums while taking this medication. Consult your doctor if this occurs.
