Less severe side effects include acne, back pain, breast tenderness or pain, agitation, depression, changes in the menstrual cycle, menstrual cramps, mood swings, nausea, dizziness, headaches (mild), pain or tingling at point of insertion, vaginal discharge or itching, flu-like symptoms dry eyes, or weight gain. Severe Nexplanon side effects requiring immediate medical attention include infection of the insertion site; signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, face, mouth, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing; rash, hives, or itching); or sudden weakness or numbing of one side of the body. Other severe side effects include severe pelvic cramping or pain; sudden and severe headaches or pain behind the eyes; chest pain or a heavy feeling in the chest; symptoms of jaundice; the onset of depression; a lump in the breast; jaundice; or Stage 2 hypertension.
