Prograf Information:
What is Prograf?
Prograf (tacrolimus) is an immunosuppressant used in combination with other medications to prevent the rejection of transplanted organs, specifically kidneys and hearts for adults, and livers in adults and children. While its exact method of action is unknown, it works by diminishing immune system activities and reactions.
How do I take Prograf?
Always take Prograf medicine exactly as prescribed and do not take more or less, as your dose will be determined by your weight and your body's response to therapy. Your doctor may adjust your dose for better efficacy. This medication is usually prescribed as a split dose, i.e., capsules are taken 2 times daily at the same times every day and at least 12 hours apart. It can be taken with or without food, however, whichever you choose is what you should do every time.
What are the possible side effects of taking Prograf?
Common side effects are not a problem unless they persist or worsen. For Prograf, these include: infections, insomnia, weakness, general pain, headache, kidney problems, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, stomach pain, high blood pressure, swelling in your hands or feet, abnormal levels of potassium or phosphate, numbness, tingling sensation, or tremors.
Because this medication interferes with the way your immune system responds to infection, you are more susceptible to potentially fatal illness. Seek medical attention if you experience: unusual and easy bruising, unusual bleeding especially from soft tissues, pale skin, flu-like symptoms including fever and chills, skin redness or warmth, unusual sweating, painful mouth sores or sore throat, unusual and sudden weakness or muscle aches.
Some side effects require immediate medical assistance. These include: confusion, vision problems that may start slowly and get worse quickly, changes in behavior or mental state, anxiety, slow reflexes, problems with balance or speech, seizure, jerky movements, bone pain, severe headache especially with chest pain or dizziness, fainting or feeling as though you may faint, fast or pounding heartbeat, pounding feeling in your neck or ears, unusual changes in appetite, breath that smells fruity, slow heart rate especially with a weak pulse, muscle weakness, numbness or tingling sensation, increased urination, painful urination or an inability to urinate, bloody or tarry stool, severe nausea with vomiting blood or what looks like coffee grounds.
What if I forget to take a dose of Prograf?
Never take a double dose of Prograf to make up for missed doses, so if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise you may take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.
How do I store Prograf?
Keep Prograf away from excess moisture or heat (e.g., a bathroom), and store at room temperature. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Prograf?
Symptoms of Prograf overdose may include hives and unusual sleepiness. If you suspect overdose for any reason, contact your local poison control center or seek immediate emergency medical assistance.
Warnings
Do not receive "live" vaccines while you are taking Prograf. Talk to your doctor if you or someone around you needs to be vaccinated. Similarly, avoid people who are sick, since Prograf limits your body's ability to fend off infection and illness.
Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medication, as it can interact with your medication and cause adverse effects. Also, avoid alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of side effects.
Prograf can make you more sensitive to light and make you sunburn more easily. Avoid tanning beds and always wear protective clothing or use sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher when you go out in the sun.
Prograf may increase your risk of certain kinds of cancer. Be sure to discuss all of the risks and benefits of taking this medication with your doctor. When taking Prograf after a kidney transplant, a small percentage of patients have developed diabetes. Be sure you understand the risks and symptoms.
