What is Zortress?

Zortress is the drug everolimus, a kinase inhibitor that is prescribed, along with other medications, to prevent the rejection of a transplanted kidney or liver.  It decreases the chance of organ rejection by suppressing immune system activity. Discuss with your doctor the risks of taking this medication.

How do I take Zortress?

Zortress is administered as a tablet that is taken orally with water. This medication may be taken with or without food, but subsequent doses should always be taken in the same manner as the initial dose. The amount taken and the frequency of dosing will be determined by your doctor; follow the dosing instructions exactly. Swallow the tablets whole; do not split, crush, chew them. Do not take any tablet that has been broken or crushed. Do not stop taking this medication without your doctor’s written approval.

Before taking Zortress, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to everolimus or any of the ingredients in the Zortress drug
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You have, or have had, hepatitis B, or any type of recent infection
  • You have a personal or family history of skin cancer
  • You have received a heart transplant
  • You have diabetes,
  • You have elevated cholesterol or triglyceride levels
  • You have a condition that prevents proper digestion of dairy products or foods containing starches or sugars
  • You are scheduled to receive vaccinations

What are the possible side effects of taking Zortress?

Mild side effects of Zortress may include acne, aggression or other behavioral changes, anxiety, changes in food tasting abilities, constipation, diarrhea, sleep difficulties, erectile dysfunction, dry mouth or dry skin, hair loss, headache, irregular menstrual periods, muscle cramps, nosebleed, back pain, arm pain, joint pain, leg pain, nail problems, weakness or weight loss. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention may include arrhythmia, mouth sores, swollen mouth, chest pain, dizziness, extreme hunger or thirst, flushing, pale skin, seizures, appetite changes, swelling of the extremities, tachycardia, unusual bleeding or bruising, wheezing, symptoms of jaundice, decreased urination or an inability to urinate, pale stools, bloody urine, vomiting, weakness on one side of the body, loss of coordination or balance, unusual personality changes, confusion or disorientation, or signs of skin cancer.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zortress?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Zortress and fewer than six hours have elapsed since the scheduled time, take the missed dose immediately; however, if six hours or more have passed, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the amount taken or change the regimen to make up for a dose that was missed.

How do I store Zortress?

Keep Zortress tightly sealed in its original packaging, at room temperature and out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Zortress?

If you or someone in your home has overdosed on Zortress, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.

Warnings

Do not consume grapefruit products or use mouthwash while taking Zortress. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Wounds may not heal properly while using this drug; contact your doctor if a wound reddens, swells, or becomes infected. Zortress may: cause blood clots in kidneys; weaken the immune system; increase the risk of infection or of developing a life-threatening infection; or increase the risk of skin cancer. Do not taken any Zortress tablet that has been broken or crushed.

 

Brand Names

Zortress is a brand name form of the medication everolimus; it is also marketed as Afinitor and Afinitor Disperz. However, these medications cannot be substituted for one another as they are used to treat different conditions and doing so can be lethal.
