Rapamune Information:
What is Rapamune?
Rapamune is an immunosuppressant drug, meaning that it suppresses the immune system to keep it from attacking a newly transplanted organ. It is primarily used for kidney transplants, but it is also sometimes used alongside other medications to treat lymphangioleiomyomatosis, a rare lung disorder that can cause breathing problems.
How do I take Rapamune?
Take Rapamune only as frequently as your doctor has told you to (usually once daily). You may take this drug with or without food, but take it the same way every day to ensure that it is absorbed correctly. If you are prone to nausea or stomach upset, it may be best to take Rapamune with food.
Before taking Rapamune, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have liver or kidney disease
- You currently have or have recently had any type of infection
- You have cytomegalovirus
- You have high cholesterol or triglycerides
- You have or have had cancer, or you have a family history of skin cancer
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Rapamune?
Common side effects of Rapamune may include headache, nausea, diarrhea, joint pain, or difficulty sleeping. Rapamune may also cause your cholesterol or triglycerides to rise, so you may need to have regular lab tests or take a cholesterol medicine. Let your doctor know if you have any side effects that are long-lasting or bothersome, and contact your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including changes in urine, chest pain, difficulty breathing, jaundice, unusual mental changes, coordination problems, hearing problems, vision changes, or changes in your menstrual cycle. This is not a complete list of possible side effects, and you should always consult your doctor if you experience any side effect that worries you.
What if I forget to take a dose of Rapamune?
Take the missed dose once you remember it, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the normal time. Do not double your dose to catch up.
How do I store Rapamune?
Store Rapamune in its original packaging at room temperature. Do not keep it in the bathroom, since light and humidity can negatively affect it. Keep it out of sight and reach of any children or pets in your home.
What happens if I overdose on Rapamune?
If you believe that you or someone in your home has overdosed on the Rapamune drug, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or go to the nearest emergency room if the person is experiencing severe symptoms of an overdose.
Warnings
If you also take the drug cyclosporine, wait at least four hours after taking it before taking Rapamune. Because the Rapamune drug suppresses your immune system, you should avoid getting any vaccinations without your doctor’s permission or being around anyone who has a contagious illness while you are taking this medication. Wash your hands regularly to reduce your risk of getting an infection. Wear protective clothing and high SPF sunscreen when you go outside, since Rapamune makes you more susceptible to developing skin cancer.
Brand Names
Rapamune is a brand name drug. The FDA has approved a generic equivalent, called sirolimus. This generic form is usually less expensive, but Rapamune may cost less when you use a coupon from HelpRx.
