Seasonale Information:
What is Seasonale?
Seasonale is a birth control drug containing two female hormones: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and levonorgestrel (a progestin). It prevents ovulation and makes vaginal fluid thicker so that sperm cannot reach an egg, which helps prevent pregnancy. Some women take it to reduce the risk of ovarian cysts or to help clear up their skin if they have acne that is caused by hormones. It also regulates menstrual cycles so that you should only have four periods per year.
How do I take Seasonale?
Take one Seasonale pill per day in the order they appear in the packet. The first 84 pills are active (meaning they contain hormones), while the last 7 are ‘reminder’ pills (with no hormones), and you should start your period during the week you are taking the reminder pills. If you are just beginning to use Seasonale, take the first pill on the first Sunday after your period starts (or the day your period starts, if it is a Sunday). It is important that you take this medication at the same time every day; if you do not, it will be less effective.
Before taking Seasonale, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to estrogens or progestins, or you have any other known allergies
- You have a history of blood clots or a blood clotting disorder
- You have high cholesterol/triglycerides
- You have a personal or family history of hormone-related cancer
- You have had an abnormal mammogram
- You have high blood pressure, are a smoker, or have other risk factors for heart disease
- You have any heart problems
- You have had a stroke
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have a history of depression
- You have diabetes
- You get severe migraines
- You have a history of jaundice related to pregnancy or hormonal birth control use
- You have thyroid problems
- You have gallbladder disease
- You have any unexplained vaginal bleeding
- You are breastfeeding
What are the possible side effects of taking Seasonale?
The Seasonale drug may cause mild nausea, vaginal irritation, breast tenderness, weight changes, or bloating. These side effects usually go away as your body adjusts to the medication, but if they do not, or if they are particularly bothersome, tell your doctor. You may also experience light vaginal bleeding (‘spotting’) in between periods when you first start using this medication; you should gradually adjust and eventually have your period once every three months. Serious side effects are rare, but let your doctor know right away if you experience anything that concerns you, especially a breast lump, signs of depression, chest pain, or signs of a heart attack.
What if I forget to take a dose of Seasonale?
If you miss one active pill, take two the next day, and then resume your normal dosage schedule. If you miss two active pills, take two pills for two days in a row before going back to your normal schedule. If you miss three active pills, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. You should use a back-up method of birth control for at least a week if you miss two or more active pills, and you may have some breakthrough bleeding in between periods if you miss three pills. If you miss any reminder Seasonale pills, throw them out and get back to your usual schedule—since these pills do not contain hormones, it does not matter if you miss them.
How do I store Seasonale?
Store Seasonale at room temperature somewhere that children and pets cannot easily access it. Do not keep it in the bathroom, since bright light and humidity can negatively affect it.
What happens if I overdose on Seasonale?
Overdosing on Seasonale pills may cause nausea, vomiting, or sudden vaginal bleeding. Call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) right away if you or someone in your household has overdosed on this medication.
Warnings
Seasonale will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases; you should always use a condom if you do not know your partner’s sexual history. Do not smoke while using Seasonale, as this increases your risk of developing blood clots, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, and wear high SPF sunscreen or protective clothing when you do need to be outside; Seasonale may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight.
