Seasonique Information:
What is Seasonique?
Seasonique is an extended cycle birth control. Each pack contains 91 pills, and you will only get your period approximately once every three months. Most of the pills contain .15mg of levonorgestrel (progestin) and .03mg of ethinyl estradiol (estrogen). The yellow tablets only contain .01mg of ethinyl estradiol. Seasonique works to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation and thickening cervical mucous to prevent sperm from reaching the egg. It also changes the uterine lining to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg.
How do I take Seasonique?
Pick a time of day when it is easiest for you to remember to take your birth control pill. Seasonique should be taken at the same time every day for it to be most effective. Take one pill per day until you finish the pack. If you are not switching over to Seasonique from another type of hormonal contraceptive, you will have to use back-up contraception for 7 days. Ask your doctor what is the best day to start taking Seasonique and how many days you need back-up contraception. After you finish the first 84 pills in your pack and start taking the yellow pills, you should get your period. If you miss a period, talk to your doctor.
Before taking Seasonique, tell your doctor if:
- You smoke cigarettes.
- You have a clotting disorder or if you’ve ever had a blood clot.
- You have ever had a stroke or heart attack.
- You have heart disease or high blood pressure.
- You have ever had breast cancer or any type of estrogen-dependent cancer.
- You have asthma or diabetes.
- You have ever had liver disease or jaundice.
- You have thyroid problems.
- You have kidney disease or adrenal insufficiency.
- You are experiencing abnormal menstrual bleeding.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You suffer from depression or another mental illness.
- You get migraine headaches
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Seasonique.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, including St. John’s wort, antifungals, antibiotics, medications that affect your hormones, thyroid medications, blood pressure medications, blood thinners or steroids.
What are the possible side effects of taking Seasonique?
Common drug side effects from Seasonique include spotting, weight changes, breast tenderness, bloating, nausea and headaches. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away over time, tell your doctor. Serious but rare side effects that you should report immediately include breast lumps, abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, jaundice, negative mood changes or depression, pain in your jaw, left arm or chest; confusion, slurred speech, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, swelling in the legs or feet, shortness of breath and migraines.
What if I forget to take a dose of Seasonique?
If you forget to take Seasonique, take the missed pill as soon as you remember it and then continue on your regular routine. If it is already time for your next dose, take two pills at once. If you miss pills two days in a row, take two pills the day you remember and two pills the following day to catch up. If you miss two or more pills in a row, you will need to use back-up contraception for 7 days. If you miss more than two pills, ask your doctor what to do.
How do I store Seasonqiue?
Store Seasonique in its original pack so you can remember what day you are on. Keep your pills where it is easy for you to remember to take them on time. Keep the pills at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and keep them out of reach of children and pets.
