Wellbutrin Information:
What is Wellbutrin?
It is the brand name version of bupropion hydrochloride, and it is also available as sustained-release (SR) or extended-release (XL). As an aminoketone class antidepressant, it is unrelated to the more well-known tricyclic, SSRI, or other known antidepressant agents, so the precise method of action is unknown. It is thought to increase some chemicals in the brain related to mood. It is used for smoking cessation because it reduces withdrawal affects and nicotine cravings. Other uses for Wellbutrin include treating chronic fatigue, boosting sex drive (particularly for people taking medications that diminish sex drive or function), and treating ADHD.
How do I take Wellbutrin?
This will depend on the uses for Wellbutrin in question, as well as your medical history. There are 75mg and 100mg Wellbutrin pills, although the maximum dose is 450mg. High doses of Wellbutrin are prescribed solely for acute episodes of Major Depressive Disorder, and should only be taken at that dosage for as long as directed to do so by your doctor.
Normal adult dosages are a maximum of 300mg for SAD, depression, and smoking cessation. Usually prescriptions are for 1 tablet 3 or 4 times daily at 6 or 4 hours apart respectively (standard), 1 tablet 2 times daily at least 8 hours apart (SR), or 1 tablet 1 time daily (XL). Wellbutrin pills are taken orally, and may be taken with food to avoid stomach upset. Always take your medication at the same time every day for maximum effectiveness.
Never crush, cut, break, or chew your Wellbutrin SR or XL, as the medication will not be administered in the correct dosing at the correct time.
Before taking Wellbutrin, tell your doctor if:
- You are currently or have recently stopped taking other medication with bupropion.
- You are pregnant, may become pregnant, are breastfeeding or intend to breast feed, as this medication can harm your child.
- You have diabetes.
- You have bipolar disorder.
- You have epilepsy or other disorders with seizure.
- You have a history of brain or spinal injury or tumors.
- You have a history of or currently have kidney or liver disease, especially cirrhosis.
- You have a history of or currently have heart problems or disease, including high blood pressure and heart attack.
- You have a history of or currently have an eating disorder.
- You have recently suddenly discontinued taking major sedatives or any seizure medications, or if you have suddenly stopped drinking alcohol.
- You have taken MAOIs in the past 14 days.
- You have a history of having difficulty with smoking cessation.
- You have any medical or food allergies.
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially psychiatric medication, sedatives, sleeping pills, beta blockers, or seizure medications.
What are the possible side effects of taking Wellbutrin?
Some side effects can be very serious. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience: unusual anxiety or restlessness, unusual irritability or anger, confusion or inability to concentrate, an unusually extreme distrust in people, aggressive behavior or attacking/assaulting others, unusual impulsiveness or over excitement with talking or moving quickly, inability to hold still, hallucinations (audible, visual, or sensory), false beliefs regardless of facts, seizures or other trembling or shaking, sudden sweats, fainting, headache or a ringing in the ears, skin rash or hives, dry mouth, hyperventilation, irregular or too fast heart rate.
Common side effects include: drowsiness, blurred vision, change in sense of taste or a decreased appetite, dizziness, unusual sense of wellbeing, sore throat, mild trembling, sweating, abdominal or stomach pains, increased need to urinate, constipation.
What if I forget to take a dose of Wellbutrin?
You may take the missed dose Wellbutrin medicine as soon as you remember it, unless it is time or almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and maintain your normal dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once or take extra medication to make up for the missed dose as it increases your risk of seizure or overdose.
How do I store Wellbutrin?
Keep Wellbutrin medicine away from moisture and heat, and store at room temperature.
What happens if I overdose on Wellbutrin?
An overdose of this medication can be fatal. Call your local poison control center or seek emergency medical assistance immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: hallucinations, shallow breathing, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeat, muscle stiffness.
Warnings
Only take as much Wellbutrin as prescribed as it may increase your risk of seizure.
Do not take multiple versions of this medication (i.e., bupropion HCl) at the same time. Antidepressants can be problematic when prescribed to children, teenagers, or young adults. If depression worsens or they start having suicidal ideations or actions, discontinue the medication immediately and talk to your doctor as soon as possible.
This medication can alter the way you think or react, so wait to see how you'll react to it before driving or performing other potentially hazardous tasks. Taking it too close to bedtime may also cause difficulty falling asleep. You will need to adjust your medication schedule to fix this.
Drinking alcohol while taking this medication may increase your risk of seizures. If you are a regular or heavy drinker, discuss how to step down your alcohol consumption before beginning Wellbutrin.
Do not continue to smoke while taking this medication as a smoking cessation aid.
Do not suddenly discontinue taking your Wellbutrin, as there may be withdrawal symptoms. Remember, for Wellbutrin patient assistance or answers to any questions you may have, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
