Zeosa Information:

What is Zeosa?

Zeosa is a hormone-based form of birth control that contains ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and norethindrone (a progestin). These female hormones prevent ovulation and cause your cervical mucus to become thicker, making it more difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg and preventing pregnancy as a result. When used exactly as directed, the failure rate of this medication is very low (about 1%).

How do I take Zeosa?

If you are just starting to use hormonal birth control, take the first Zeosa pill in the packet the first Sunday after your period starts. Take one pill per day in the order they appear in the packet, at the same time every day. Use a backup form of birth control, such as condoms, for the first week after you start taking this medication. When you finish one packet, start another the next day.

Before taking Zeosa, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
  • You think you might be pregnant
  • You are a smoker
  • You have uncontrolled hypertension
  • You have high cholesterol or triglycerides
  • You have diabetes
  • You get severe migraines
  • You have any circulation or blood clotting problems
  • You have a history of jaundice during pregnancy or when taking hormonal birth control
  • You have a personal or family history of hormone-related cancer or have had an abnormal mammogram
  • You have heart disease
  • You have a history of depression
  • You have a history or irregular periods or unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • You have an underactive thyroid
  • You have tuberculosis
  • You have epilepsy

What are the possible side effects of taking Zeosa?

Zeosa may cause certain side effects, including nausea, breast tenderness, hair thinning, weight gain, problems wearing contact lenses, or vaginal itching. If you have any side effects that are bothersome or last a long time, tell your doctor. Stop taking Zeosa and call your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects, including new or worsening depression, severe migraines, a breast lump, swollen hands or feet, or vision changes. Get emergency medical attention if you have signs of a blood clot, stroke, or heart attack.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zeosa?

If you miss an active pill (one of the first 21 pills in the packet), take it as soon as you remember, even if that means taking two pills in the same day. If you miss two pills in a row in the first two weeks of the packet, take two pills for two days in a row until you catch up, and then resume your normal schedule. If you miss two active pills in a row during the third week or if you miss three or more active pills in weeks one through three, throw out the rest of the pack and start another one immediately. Use a backup form of birth control for at least a week. If you miss any of the pills in the fourth week, throw them out. These pills don’t contain hormones and are merely meant to serve as reminders.

How do I store Zeosa?

Store your Zeosa packets at room temperature, away from light and moisture and out of reach of pets and children. If you have stopped using this form of hormonal birth control and have leftover pills, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of them.

What happens if I overdose on Zeosa?

Overdosing on Zeosa may lead to abnormal vaginal bleeding and nausea. If you believe you have overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.

Warnings

Keep in mind that birth control pills will not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Oral contraceptives like Zeosa may slightly increase your risk of blood clots, and the risk may be higher if you are over 35 or a smoker. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this medication.

Brand Names

Zeosa is a branded generic drug. The same combination of ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone is also available in several other birth control drugs, including Femcon FE, Lo Loestrin FE, and Minastrin 24 FE. Discuss your birth control options with your doctor, and search HelpRx for discounts on any medication your doctor prescribes.
