Acetic Acid Information:

What is acetic acid?

There is no single answer to the question what is acetic acid used for? The most common use of acetic acid in medicine is as an antibiotic solution that treats infections caused by bacteria or fungus in the ear. It is used for treatment of infections in the external ear canal. Acetic acid helps to reduce pain and inflammation. Moisture in the ear canal contributes to bacteria and fungus growth. Otic acetic acid solution addresses this when it is coupled with drying ingredients like glycerin or alcohol.

Acetic acid is a large component in vinegar and is used as a solvent in everyday use and in labs. Other uses for Acetic acid include physical therapy treatment. It is administered through a process known as iontophoresis. Iontophroesis uses electrical stimulation to administer medication into the body transdermally (through the skin).

How do I take acetic acid?

The affected ear canal should be thoroughly cleaned of any debris to allow the acetic acid solution to make direct contact with the infected area(s). Saturate a small cotton ball or wick with the acetic acid solution and insert it into the canal. The saturated cotton should be kept in for at least 24 hours and may be taken out and re-moistened as needed. It should remain saturated for the full 24 hours that it sits in the ear canal. Ideally, the cotton should be re-wetted every 4 to 6 hours. After the 24-hour course, you may be instructed to instill drops of the solution directly into the canal several times a day for a few days after. Do not place the medication’s dropper tip into your ear, or allow the tip to touch any surface to avoid potential contamination. In younger children, a smaller dosage will be necessary due to the patient’s size.

Before taking acetic acid, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to acetic acid, or if you have a ruptured ear drum.
  • You are allergic to any other drugs.
  • You are using any other prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements.
  • You have severe ear pain, are experiencing a fever, or have hearing problems.
  • You are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, or are breast-feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking acetic acid?

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, especially those that may indicate a possible allergic reaction. Symptoms include: hives, troubled breathing, swelling of your throat, lips, tongue, or face.

A less serious side effect that should be mentioned to your doctor may include minor stinging or burning in the canal when the drops are applied.

What if I forget to take a dose of acetic acid?

If a dose of acetic acid is missed, administer it as soon as you recall. If it is just about time for the next dose, do not double up on doses, skip your missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.

How do I store acetic acid?

Acetic acid should be stored in the container or bottle that it comes in and safely out of reach of children. It should be kept in a dry, cool area, away from any moisture.  If the medication has expired or is no longer needed, it should be discarded.

What happens if I overdose on acetic acid?

Overdose on acetic acid is unlikely, but if an allergic reaction is suspected or the medication was ingested on accident, contact your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222, call 911, or go to an emergency room immediately.

Warnings

If extreme sensitization or irritation occurs after using acetic acid, discontinue and contact your prescribing doctor.

Avoid any contact with the eyes. If acetic acid gets in your eye(s), flush immediately with cool water for at least 15 minutes.
