Altace Information:

What is Altace?

Altace is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by relaxing blood vessels, which improves blood flow and puts less strain on the heart. It may be prescribed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), improve survival rate after a heart attack, or prevent kidney damage related to diabetes.

How do I take Altace?

Your dosage will depend on your condition and response to treat, so take the Altace drug exactly as it has been prescribed. Your doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase it to reduce the risk of side effects. Swallow the capsule or tablet whole, and drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid becoming dehydrated. You may take this medication with or without food.

Before taking Altace, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements, especially telmisartan
  • You have diabetes
  • You have liver or kidney disease, or are on dialysis
  • You have a connective tissue disease
  • You have high potassium levels
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Altace?

Altace may cause dizziness, drowsiness, headaches, or a dry cough. These mild side effects usually go away as your body adjusts to the medication, but if they do not, let your doctor know. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any rare but serious side effects, such as chest pain, severe dizziness, difficulty urinating, sudden weakness, flu-like symptoms, nausea, an irregular heartbeat, jaundice, dark urine, or severe abdominal or stomach pain.

What happens if I forget to take a dose of Altace?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule. Do not double your dose in an effort to catch up.

How do I store Altace?

Keep your Altace medicine in a tightly sealed container and store it at room temperature, away from bright light and moisture. Store it somewhere that children and pets cannot easily access. If you no longer need the medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely discard it.

What happens if I overdose on Altace?

Overdosing on the Altace drug may cause serious side effects, including severe dizziness and fainting. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away. If the person who overdosed has lost consciousness, get emergency medical attention.

Warnings

Some people become dizzy or drowsy after taking Altace, so do not drive or perform other tasks that require clear focus until you’re sure you can do so safely. Always stand up slowly from a sitting or lying position to reduce your risk of becoming lightheaded. Limit your alcohol consumption, since alcohol can increase the risk of certain side effects. Do not take potassium or sodium supplements unless your doctor has given you permission to do so.
