What is Aplenzin?
Aplenzin contains buproprion which is classified as an atypical antipsychotic medication. Buproprion is thought to work to treat depression and as a smoking cessation agent by increasing the availability of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.
How do I take Aplenzin?
Take Aplenzin pills once a day at the same time every day, or as specified by your doctor. These pills should not be crushed, broken or chewed; they should be swallowed whole. Aplenzin can be taken with or without food.
Before taking Aplenzin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Aplenzin.
- You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially beta blockers, insulin, other medications for mental illness, anticonvulsants, steroids, sedatives, sleeping pills, antivirals, medications for Parkinson’s disease, Zyvox or linezolid, methylene blue, Nardil and medications for heart problems.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You regularly drink alcohol.
- You have ever had a seizure.
- You have ever had anorexia or bulimia.
- You regularly take sedatives.
- You have high blood pressure or diabetes.
- You have kidney, liver or heart disease.
- You have ever had a brain or spinal tumor.
- You have glaucoma.
What are the possible side effects of taking Aplenzin?
Possible side effects from taking Aplenzin include headache, nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, loss of appetite, tremors, trouble sleeping, constipation, sweating, ringing sound in the ears and sore throat. If any of these side effects are severe or do not go away, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that you should report to your doctor immediately include seizures, confusion or irrational fear, negative mood changes or worsening depression, hallucinations, muscle pain, fever, hoarseness, and fast or irregular heartbeat.
What if I forget to take a dose of Aplenzin?
If you forget to take a dose of Aplenzin, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. It is important to take evenly-spaced doses of this medication. Never take a double dose to try to compensate for a missed one. If you have any questions about missing a dose, contact your pharmacist for Aplenzin patient assistance.
How do I store Aplenzin?
Store Aplenzin in an airtight, childproof container at room temperature. Keep this medication away from light, heat and moisture. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Aplenzin?
Signs of Aplenzin overdose include visual or auditory hallucinations, seizures, accelerated heartbeat and loss of consciousness. If you or someone else has overdoses on Aplenzin, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive, having seizures or not breathing, call 911.
Warnings
Mixing alcohol or sedatives with Aplenzin can cause dangerous or unwanted side effects. If you drink alcohol, talk to your doctor about how much is safe. If you take sedatives, your doctor will most likely prescribe a different medication. Aplenzin may cause angle-closure glaucoma. If you haven’t had an eye exam recently, talk to your doctor about getting one before you start Aplenzin. This medication may increase your blood pressure, especially if you smoke or use nicotine therapy.
Brand Names
Aplenzin is a brand of bupropion. Bupropion and extended release bupropion are available in generic form and are significantly cheaper. However, the dose sizes are different, and your doctor may or may not recommend substitutions. Other brand names include Wellbutrin and Wellbutrin XL. A cheap off-brand is called Budeprion.
