What is Azilect?

Azilect is classified as a MAOI medication which were traditionally used as antidepressants. Azilect contains a newer MAOI medication called rasagiline. It works by primarily inhibiting MAO type B, which is the enzyme primarily responsible for the breakdown of dopamine. Parkinson’s disease occurs when dopamine-producing cells start to die. Stopping the breakdown of dopamine helps to compensate for the lack of dopamine production in patients with Parkinson’s disease.

What are the possible side effects of taking Azilect?

Possible side effects from taking Azilect include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, fever, heartburn, dry mouth, abdominal pain, joint pain and muscle pain. If these side effects are persistent or severe, report them to your doctor as soon as possible. Other more serious side effects include fainting, mood changes and behavioral changes, hallucinations, twitching, increased shaking, swollen legs or ankles, changes in urination, unexplained wait gain or loss and vomit that looks like coffee grounds. If you experience any of these side effects, report them to your doctor immediately. Azilect has been known to cause uncontrollable and uncharacteristic urges such as gambling or sexual urges. If you experience this, tell your doctor immediately.

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Azilect?

If you forget to take a dose of Azilect, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Do not take a double dose of Azilect to compensate for a missed one.

How do I store Azilect?

Store Azilect in a tightly closed container at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Azilect?

Signs of overdose on Azilect include high blood pressure, drowsiness, dizziness, agitation, severe headache, hyperactivity, hallucinations, chest pain, convulsions and coma. The effects of Azilect overdose may not show until several hours later. If you think you have overdosed on Azilect, call the Poison Control Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222. If someone is in a coma or unresponsive, call 911.

Warnings

There are certain foods and drinks that should be avoided when taking Azilect. One of these is aged cheese. Talk to your doctor about what dietary guidelines you should follow. Azilect can cause dangerously high blood pressure if taken in excess or mixed with foods, drinks or other medications that could raise your blood pressure. This medication can cause you to suddenly fall asleep. Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medication unless you’ve discussed it with your doctor.
