Eldepryl Information:
Eldepryl is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). It works by preventing the breakdown of dopamine in the brain and is often prescribed to people with Parkinson’s disease when there is a decrease in response to the drug levodopa. Eldepryl will not cure Parkinson’s disease, but it may reduce symptoms such as tremors, muscle stiffness, and coordination problems.
Take Eldepryl twice a day (at breakfast and lunch) unless your doctor gives you different instructions. Eating certain foods with Eldepryl may raise your blood pressure, so your doctor will give you a list of foods to avoid while taking this medication. Don’t adjust your dosage or stop taking this drug without your doctor’s permission. Suddenly stopping Eldepryl may cause adverse withdrawal effects.
Before taking Eldepryl, tell your doctor if:
- You have any food or drug allergies
- You have taken a drug containing fluoxetine in the past five weeks
- You are currently taking any other medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have high blood pressure
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy
Eldepryl may cause skin irritation, dizziness, stomach pain, nausea, constipation, or insomnia. Tell your doctor if you have any side effects that get worse, or if you experience unusual urges (e.g. sexual urges or urges to gamble). Call your doctor right away if you experience severe lightheadedness, difficulty breathing, hallucinations, unusual mood or behavior changes, dangerously high blood pressure, or worsening symptoms of Parkinson’s. Discuss all possible risks of this medication with your doctor to determine if it’s safe for you to use.
Take the forgotten dose as soon as you can, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the regular time. Don’t take two doses at once.
Store your Eldepryl capsules in a childproof container, away from heat and moisture. Keep your medication somewhere that stays at room temperature throughout the day.
Overdosing on Eldepryl may cause hallucinations, severe headaches, vision changes, excessive sweating, clammy skin, an irregular heart rate, fainting, or seizures. Call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) or go to the nearest emergency room if you suspect that you or someone in your home has overdosed.
Warnings
Eldepryl may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so don’t drive or operate heavy machinery until you know you can do so safely. Don’t drink alcohol while taking this medication. You should also avoid foods that are high in tyramine, such as aged cheeses and cured meats. Your doctor should provide you with a complete list of foods to avoid.
Brand Names
Selegiline is the FDA-approved generic equivalent of Eldepryl. Usually, generic drugs are less expensive than their branded equivalents, but selegiline and Eldepryl are comparably priced. You may not be able to save money by switching to the generic form, but you can save up to 75% when you use an Eldepryl coupon from HelpRx. Print or download yours now.
