Comtan Information:
What is Comtan?
Comtan is used to help control Parkinson’s disease symptoms that may occur when a dose of carbidopa/levodopa begins wearing off. Carbidopa and levodopa are commonly used as a main course of treatment for Parkinson’s, but the period of effectiveness for these medications may start to shorten over time, leading to a return of symptoms such as tremors, muscle spasms, and stiffness. Comtan blocks a substance that breaks down levodopa, making it effective for longer and reducing the likelihood of “wearing-off” symptoms between doses.
How do I take Comtan?
Comtan is usually taken at the same time as carbidopa/levodopa, up to eight times a day. This medication can be taken with or without food but should always be taken with plenty of fluids. Follow your doctor’s dosage instructions carefully; your doctor may occasionally adjust your dose to ensure it is effective.
Before taking Comtan, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have a history of mental illness
- You have a history of alcoholism
- You have a history of low blood pressure
- You have a sleep disorder
- You have liver disease
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Comtan?
The Comtan drug may cause drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, gas, or uncontrolled muscle movements. If you have any side effects that last a long time or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including unusual changes in mood or behavior, auditory or visual hallucinations, persistent diarrhea, muscle rigidity, muscle pain, high fever, irregular heart rhythm, easy bruising or bleeding, or worsening Parkinson’s symptoms.
What if I forget to take a dose of Comtan?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed one and resume your regular dosage schedule. Do not take more of the medicine than you normally would for a single dose.
How do I store Comtan?
Keep Comtan in a tightly sealed container and store it at room temperature, away from bright light and moisture. As with all prescription drugs, keep it out of reach of children and pets. If you no longer need this medicine and you are unsure how to safely dispose of it, talk to your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Comtan?
If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed on the Comtan drug, get emergency medical help. Signs of an overdose may include confusion, agitation, aggression, severe drowsiness, or loss of consciousness.
Warnings
Comtan may cause drowsiness, and some people who use this medication have reported falling asleep during daily activities, such as eating or working. Avoid driving and performing other tasks that require alertness until you know how this medication affects you, and tell your doctor if you have problems related to daytime tiredness. This medication may also cause lightheadedness, so always stand up slowly from a sitting or lying position to reduce your likelihood of feeling dizziness. Avoid alcoholic beverages, as alcohol can exacerbate certain side effects. Do not suddenly stop taking Comtan without talking to your doctor; you will likely need to gradually reduce your dose.
Brand Names
Comtan is a brand name drug, and the FDA has approved a generic equivalent (entacapone). The generic form is usually less expensive, so ask your doctor if it is possible to switch. HelpRx has a coupon for both Comtan and entacapone, so you should be able to reduce your out-of-pocket expense no matter what form of the medication your doctor prescribes.
