Cefprozil Information:
What is cefprozil?
Cefprozil is classified as a cephalosporin antibiotic and is proven effective in stopping bacterial growth in the body. It is available only with a prescription and may be recommended for the treatment of sinusitis, skin infections, bronchitis, ear, nose, and throat infections, and other bacterial illnesses or conditions. It is not to be used to treat influenza, colds, or other viral infections.
How do I take cefprozil?
Cefprozil is taken in either tablet or liquid form, orally, once or twice a day for ten days. To help with remembering to take this medication, take it at the same time every day at the recommended dosage.
When taking it in liquid form, shake the bottle well, and pour the prescribed amount into a measuring spoon, metered cup, or oral syringe and drink it.
If you are taking a tablet, swallow it while drinking a full glass of water. Do not take more or less than the prescribed amount. Continuing taking this medication until the entire quantity has been consumed, even if you are feeling well.
Before taking cefprozil, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to cefprozil, penicillin, or any cephalosporin antibiotics;
- You are allergic to any medications;
- You have any allergies (the inactive ingredients in cefprozil may trigger them);
- You have kidney disease;
- You have an intestinal disease, such as colitis or other illness;
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing;
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements.
What are the possible side effects of taking cefprozil?
Cefprozil may cause certain side effects. Tell your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms and they are severe or do not go away: dizziness, vomiting, stomach pain, upset stomach, or diarrhea. Some rarer symptoms that may occur include hives, diaper rash, difficulty breathing or swallowing, yellowing of the eyes and skin, itching, wheezing, or a vaginal discharge. If you experience any of these, contact your physician immediately.
What if I forget to take a dose of cefprozil?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of cefprozil, take it as soon as your remember. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one, and resume the normal schedule. Do not take double dose of this medication.
How do I store cefprozil?
Keep cefprozil out of the reach of children. Store the liquid form of this medication in the refrigerator. Do not freeze. Dispose of the liquid form after fourteen days. Keep tablets away from extremes of heat, cold, and humidity. Store both forms in their original containers. Dispose of old or expired prescriptions according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on cefprozil?
If an overdose of cefprozil is suspected, contact poison control at 800 – 222 – 1222. If the patient has stopped breathing or has not collapsed, contact Emergency Services at 911. If the patient has compromised renal functions, a severe overdose may require hemodialysis.
Warnings
Do not use cefprozil to treat colds, influenza, or any viral infection or illness. Use only with a doctor’s approval since random or indiscriminate use can increase the risk anti-biotic resistant bacteria. Elderly patients may be more susceptible to side effects. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery or power tools until you are sure this medication does not make you dizzy or sleepy. Do not drink alcohol while taking this cefprozil.

At one time, cefprozil was available under the brand name Cefzil, but this product is no longer being manufactured. However, the generic formulation is readily available, and several discount coupons are available to help with keeping costs of this medication manageable.
