Ceftriaxone Information:

Ceftriaxone is a cephalosporin antibiotic. At this time, it’s only administered as an injection; there are no ceftriaxone pills on the market. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections and is also sometimes given to people with certain heart conditions before dental surgery to prevent a bacterial infection of the heart.

Your doctor may inject ceftriaxone into a vein or muscle or instruct you how to self-administer an injection at home. Follow all preparation and injection instructions carefully, and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if anything about the dosing procedure is unclear. Use ceftriaxone at evenly spaced intervals (according to your doctor’s instructions) to keep the amount of medicine in your body consistent.

Before using ceftriaxone, tell your doctor if:

·       You are allergic to any cephalosporin antibiotics or other drugs

·       You are taking any other medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially blood thinners

·       You have liver disease

·       You have kidney disease or are on dialysis

·       You have gallbladder disease

·       You have diabetes

·       You have a stomach or intestinal condition

·       You are malnourished

·       You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

Ceftriaxone may cause swelling, warmth, or soreness at the injection site. Other side effects may include mild diarrhea, loss of appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea. If any side effects last a long time or bother you, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you have abdominal or stomach pain, blood or mucus in your stools, or persistent diarrhea, as these may be signs of a severe intestinal infection. You should also contact your doctor right away if you notice unusual bruising or bleeding, dark urine, an irregular heart rate, unusual fatigue, jaundice, changes in the amount of urine, difficulty breathing, chest pain, unexplained mood changes, or seizures.

If you miss a dose, call your doctor to find out what to do. It is important to take ceftriaxone on a regular schedule.

If you are storing the ceftriaxone drug at home, follow the storage instructions on the packaging. You should keep the unmixed powder form at room temperature and avoid exposure to heat, moisture, or light. If your doctor gives you a frozen form of ceftriaxone, thaw it in the refrigerator or at room temperature before use. As with all prescription drugs, keep ceftriaxone out of reach of children and pets.

Overdosing on ceftriaxone may cause seizures or difficulty breathing. Get emergency medical attention if you or someone you know has overdosed on this drug.

Warnings

Use this medication for the full prescribed period. Stopping an antibiotic regimen too soon may cause bacteria to become more resistant to the medication. Ceftriaxone is intended for short-term use; long-term use may increase your risk of oral thrush or a vaginal yeast infection. If you experience diarrhea while taking ceftriaxone, avoid taking anti-diarrhea medications unless your doctor has given you permission.

Brand Names
