Emsam Information:
What is Emsam?
The Emsam patch is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder. Emsam contains the drug selegiline, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). The way Emsam works to treat depression is not fully understood but the inhibition of MAO enzymes, which break down monoamine neurotransmitters, results in the potentiation of these neurotransmitters. These include dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin.
How do I take Emsam?
Emsam comes in the form of a patch that is to be applied to clean skin on the upper chest, back (above the waist), upper thigh or upper arm. Do not apply to hairy areas or broken or irritated skin. Shave the area first if necessary. Avoid areas where the patch could be loosened by clothing. The Emsam patch should be removed and a new one should be applied every 24 hours, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. Place the patch over a new area of skin each time you apply it. Do not put a new patch in the same area where you applied your previous patch. Fold patches in half after removing them so that the sticky surface is not exposed and throw it in the trash. Wash and dry the area of skin where a patch was applied after removing it. Wash your hands after touching or handling patches.
Before using Emsam, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication.
- You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or herbal supplements, especially cough medicine, narcotics, other antidepressants or medications for mental conditions, weight loss medications, phenylalanine, pseudoephedrine, seizure medications, stimulants, tramadol, guarana, licorice, Ma Huang, mate and St. John’s wort.
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
- You have or have ever had kidney or liver disease.
- You have bipolar disorder, mania or other mental illnesses.
- You have heart problems.
What are the possible side effects of using Emsam?
Possible side effects from using Emsam patches include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, constipation, dry mouth, changes in libido, trouble sleeping and irritation at the site of application. If any of these side effects are severe, report them to your doctor. Serious side effects that you should report immediately include negative mood changes, confusion, vision changes, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, hallucinations, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, seizures, tremors, shivering, swollen ankles or legs, unexplained weight changes, high blood pressure, pounding heart, chest pain, neck soreness, clammy skin, dilated pupils and severe or frequent headaches.
What if I forget to apply Emsam?
If you forget to apply an Emsam patch, put one on as soon as you remember. Try to change your patch at the same time every day. If you forgot to apply it and it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Never apply more than one patch to try to compensate for a missed dose.
How do I store Emsam?
Store Emsam pouches at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit out of reach of children and pets. Do not remove them from their pouches until you are ready to apply them. Keep discarded patches out of reach of children and pets as well.
What happens if I overdose on Emsam?
There have been no reports of selegiline (Emsam) drug overdose. Signs of overdose on MAOIs include feeling faint, hyperactivity, agitation, severe headache, hallucinations, convulsions, chest pain, stiff jaw, coma and full-body spasm. These symptoms may not be immediate, and they may not all occur. MAOI overdose can be fatal. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed, remove the patch or patches and seek medication attention immediately.
Warnings
Ask your doctor about the safety of drinking alcohol while using Emsam patches. Avoid eating too many foods high in tryamine, which include fermented foods, cheeses, smoked or pickled meats or fish and cured meats. Do not expose the patch to direct heat or sunlight, such as hot tubs, heating pads, heat lamps, etc.
