Erythromycin Information:

What is erythromycin?

Erythromycin is a generic macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide spectrum of bacterial infections ranging from acne to respiratory infections and gonorrhea. The antibiotic erythromycin was originally discovered in soil samples from the Philippines, but scientists started synthesizing it in labs in the 1980s. It works by inhibiting the protein synthesis of pathogenic bacteria, stopping the growth of the bacteria and curing the infection. It is effective at killing the bacteria streptococcus pyogenes, bordetella pertussis, and staphylococcus aureus, among others. Erythromycin is available in various forms including capsules, gels, ointments, liquid, and tablets.

How do I take erythromycin?

Buy erythromycin medication with a prescription from your doctor at your local pharmacy. Erythromycin base or film tablets are to be taken orally with a glass of water. The usual dosage is once every six to eight hours. Because these tablets are used to treat a large variety of infections, your dosage could vary. Follow instructions given to you by your doctor to treat your particular infection. If you are prescribed extended release tablets or capsules, do not crush, chew or break them. Swallow them whole. If you take an extended release medication, you will most likely take your medication less frequently. Shake any liquid medication thoroughly before taking. Finish the full course of treatment prescribed by your doctor in order to prevent a relapse. Do not stop taking this medication just because you feel better.

If you are using a topical form of erythromycin to treat acne or another skin infection, wash and dry the affected area before applying the medication. Then apply a thin layer to the affected area and wash your hands. Topical mediation is usually used twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening.

Before taking erythromycin, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to antibiotics, especially erythromycin and any of the other ingredients in this medication.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • You have a history of liver disease, colitis, or any stomach problems.
  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements, especially blood thinners, benzodiazepines, cholesterol medications, ergotamine, Viagra, cisapride, pimozide, antihistamines such as astemizole and terfanadine, and any antibiotics.

What are the possible side effects of taking erythromycin?

Side effects from taking erythromycin include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, mild rash, and loss of appetite. Side effects from topical erythromycin include redness, dryness, and itching. Secondary infections like vaginal infections may occur while using this antibiotic. Contact your doctor at once if you experience signs of another infection or allergic reaction.

What if I forget to take a dose of erythromycin?

If you forget to take a dose of erythromycin, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of erythromycin. If you miss a dose, you may need to add the missed dose to end of your course of treatment in order to finish all medication prescribed by your doctor. Not finishing a course of antibiotics can cause relapse.

How do I store erythromycin?

Keep away from excess heat and moisture. Keep premixed liquid or gel forms of this medication in the refrigerator. Don’t allow it to freeze. Throw away any expired medication. What happens if I overdose on erythromycin?

Overdose on erythromycin is rare. Signs of overdose include exaggerated side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Signs of excessive use of topical erythromycin include scaly skin and swelling. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on erythromycin, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

If you are using topical erythromycin, it may make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Cover your skin or try to avoid the sun during treatment with this medication.
