Gardasil Information:

What is Gardasil?

Gardasil is medically known as a non-infectious recombinant quadrivalent vaccine that utilizes VLPs and S. cerevisiae produced proteins. In women and girls between the ages of 9 and 26, it is used to vaccinate against HPV 6, 11, 16, and 18, which can cause genital warts, and worse, cancer of the vagina, vulva, cervix, or anus. It can also be used in both genders between the ages of 9 and 26 to treat HPV 6 and 11, which can cause genital warts.

The Gardasil vaccine is not intended to treat active infections of HPV, genital warts, or cancers caused by HPV. It should not be used to replace or discontinue regular PAP smears or pelvic exams. This vaccine cannot prevent against other sexually transmitted diseases, nor can it treat other forms of HPV.

How do I take Gardasil?

The HPV vaccine, Gardasil, is administered as an intramuscular injection by medical personnel. The vaccine is done in 3 separate shots, the second shot being 2 months after the first and the last shot after 6 months.

Before taking Gardasil, tell your doctor if:

  • You have any allergies, medical or otherwise.
  • You have a weak or compromised immune system.
  • You have any blood or bleeding disorders, including hemophilia.
  • You are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, drugs, vitamins or supplements, including: autoimmune disorder medications (e.g., Arava, Raptiva), blood thinners, any kind of steroid medicine, or transplant anti-rejection medications.
  • You are receiving cancer therapies including chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
  • You have any signs that you already have any infection, including high fever.
  • You have never had or have not recently had a pelvic exam or PAP smear.
  • You have another form of HPV, or may already have an active HPV 6, 11, 16, or 18 type infection.
  • You have recently had or plan to have another type of vaccine (e.g., for the flu).

What are the possible side effects of taking Gardasil?

Some side effects can be severe. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following: allergic reaction (swelling in the face and lips, swelling in the tongue or throat, hives), swollen glands, difficulty breathing or feeling short of breath, unusual confusion or weakness, chest pain, unusually easy bruising or bleeding.

Common side effects include: redness, bruising, swelling, or itching at the injection site; mild fever and headache; insomnia or feeling tired; fever with sore throat and cough or generally feeling ill; joint muscle pain; tooth pain; nausea and vomiting; diarrhea.

If you miss your appointment, call to reschedule as soon as you remember.

What if I forget to take a dose of Gardasil?

Each Gardasil injection will be administered by medical personnel, so there is not a dose you will forget.

How do I store Gardasil?

This medication is kept refrigerated and protected from light or enough cold to freeze. However, this will be handled by medical personnel.

What happens if I overdose on Gardasil?

An overdose of the Gardasil vaccine is unlikely. If one occurs, you will already be with medical personnel.

Warnings

Some people have had seizures or feel faint as a reaction to injection. Your doctor may want to observe you for a period of time after the vaccination. Gardasil cannot protect against other sexually transmitted diseases or types of HPV types 6, 11, 16, or 18, and it cannot treat an active HPV infection, cancer caused by HPV, or genital warts. This medication is not a cure for HPV.
