Polytrim Information:

What is Polytrim?

Polytrim contains polymyxin B and trimethoprim, both of which are antibiotics. Polytrim comes in an ophthalmic (meaning for the eyes) solution and is administered through an eye dropper. It helps treat eye infections by killing bacteria.

How do I use Polytrim?

Apply Polytrim drops only as often as your doctor has instructed you to (usually once every 3 hours). Wash your hands before each dose, and tilt your head back while pulling down on your lower eyelid to make it easier to administer the medication. Gently squeeze one drop of Polytrim into the affected eye, and then close the eye while tilting your head down slightly for 2 to 3 minutes. Hold a finger to the inside corner of the eye during this time to keep the medicine from leaking out. If your doctor has instructed you to apply more than one drop to the same eye, wait 5 minutes before applying the next one.

Before using Polytrim, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to polymyxin B or trimethoprim
  • You have any other allergies
  • You are using any other prescription or non-prescription drugs, supplements, or eye drops
  • You wear contact lenses
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

What are the possible side effects of taking Polytrim?

Polytrim may cause mild stinging, burning, or itching when it is first applied to the eyes. Monitor any eye irritation, and let your doctor know if it lasts a long time or gets worse. Stop using Polytrim and contact your doctor immediately if you experience new or worsening symptoms of your infection, crusting or draining from the eyes, swollen or red eyelids, or eye pain.

What if I forget to use a dose of Polytrim?

If you forget a dose of Polytrim, administer it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for another dose. In this case, just skip the missed one and resume your normal schedule. Do not increase the number of drops you use in an effort to catch up.

How do I store Polytrim?

Keep the Polytrim eye drop bottle tightly sealed between doses. Store it at room temperature and away from bright light, high heat, and moisture. Do not leave it anywhere that children or pets could reach. If you no longer need the medicine but have some left over, ask your pharmacist how to safely get rid of it.

What happens if I overdose on Polytrim?

Overdosing on Polytrim is not expected to be dangerous. However, if you or someone in your home has swallowed some of this ophthalmic medication, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.

Warnings

Don’t let the tip of the Polytrim eye dropper touch your eye or any surfaces; this could lead to contamination and new infections. If you wear contact lenses, take them out before each dose, and don’t put them back in for at least 15 minutes after applying the drops. Use Polytrim for the full prescribed amount of time, even if your infection seems to clear up before then. Discontinuing treatment with an antibiotic too soon may allow the infection to return and become antibiotic-resistant.

Brand Names

Polytrim is a brand name drug. There is a generic equivalent sold under the name of the two active ingredients: polymyxin B/trimethoprim. The generic form is usually less expensive, so ask your doctor if it’s possible to switch. If you need brand name Polytrim, remember to use a coupon from HelpRx. You may be able to save up to 66% at the pharmacy.
