What is Skelaxin?
Skelaxin (metaxalone) treats muscle pain and spasms by causing your muscles to relax. Your doctor may also have you complete physical therapy or take other pain relief measures while you are using this medication.
How do I take Skelaxin?
Take the Skelaxin drug only as often as your doctor has instructed you to, and do not use it for longer than it has been prescribed. You can take Skelaxin with or without food, but if you experience side effects after taking this medication with a heavy meal, try taking it after a light meal or without food.
Before taking Skelaxin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
- You have anemia
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Skelaxin?
Many people take the Skelaxin drug without experiencing serious side effects; however, some patients have reported nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, or an upset stomach. If you have any of these side effects and they are particularly bothersome or last a long time, let your doctor know. Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following rare but serious side effects: unusual mood changes, fever, sore throat, jaundice, fast heartbeat, fatigue, or dark urine.
What if I forget to take a dose of Skelaxin?
Never double your dose of Skelaxin to catch up after a missed dose. If you remember that you have missed a dose and there is still a long time before your next dose, take the missed dose immediately. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule.
How do I store Skelaxin?
Keep Skelaxin in a tightly sealed container out of reach of children and pets. Store it at room temperature away from bright light and moisture. If you have unused or expired medication, ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on Skelaxin?
Overdosing on the Skelaxin drug may cause extreme drowsiness. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or go to the nearest emergency room if you observe serious side effects.
Warnings
Do not drive or participate in any activities that require alertness until you know how Skelaxin affects you. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication, as it may increase your risk of side effects.
Brand Name
Skelaxin is a brand name drug. There is a generic equivalent, metaxalone, that has been approved by the FDA. The retail price of metaxalone may be slightly lower, but you should compare prices with a Skelaxin coupon factored in to see which version will give you the lowest out-of-pocket expense.
