Vosol Hc Information:

What is Vosol HC?

Vosol HC is an ear infection medication containing acetic acid (an antibiotic) and hydrocortisone (a steroid). Acetic acid helps kill the bacteria causing the infection, and hydrocortisone helps relieve painful inflammation caused by the infection. This medication shouldn’t be used to treat an inner ear infection.

How do I use Vosol HC?

Before applying Vosol HC ear drops, remove any ear wax to the best of your ability (ask your doctor how to do so safely). Once your ear is clean, take a small piece of cotton and apply several drops of Vosol HC. Insert the cotton into your ear and leave it in for at least 24 hours, adding 3-5 drops every 4-6 hours to keep the cotton moist. After you remove the cotton, you can begin applying the drops directly to your ear 3-4 times daily. If your doctor has given you any different instructions, defer to their directions. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you still have questions about how to use this medicine.

Before using Vosol HC, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to acetic acid or hydrocortisone, or you have any other allergies
  • You have a ruptured ear drum
  • You are experiencing severe ear pain
  • You have a fever
  • You have any hearing problems
  • You are breastfeeding or pregnant

What are the possible side effects of using Vosol HC?

The most commonly reported side effects of Vosol HC are mild stinging and burning with the first application. If the stinging or burning becomes severe, remove the cotton from your ear and contact your doctor. Get emergency medical attention if you believe you’re having a severe allergic reaction to this drug.

What if I forget to use a dose of Vosol HC?

Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and get back to your regular dosing schedule.

How do I store Vosol HC?

Keep your Vosol HC bottle tightly sealed when you’re not using the medication, and store it somewhere that children and pets can’t reach. Keep it in a dry space at room temperature. If you have any leftover medication after you finish your course of treatment, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on Vosol HC?

You are unlikely to overdose on Vosol HC when applying it to your ears as intended, but this medication may be dangerous if swallowed. If you or someone in your house has swallowed some of the Vosol HC solution, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do. Go to the nearest emergency room if the person who swallowed the medication is experiencing serious side effects.

Warnings

Keep the Vosol HC solution away from your mouth, nose, and eyes. If you do get some of the medicine in any of these areas, rinse with water immediately. Do not use other ear drops during your course of treatment with Vosol HC unless your doctor has given you permission to do so.

Brand Names

Vosol HC is a brand name drug. The same medicine is also available under the brand name Acetasol HC or as the generic hydrocortisone/acetic acid. Your doctor may allow you to switch to the generic form to save money, but if you can’t switch, remember to claim a free coupon for brand name Vosol HC.
