Blephamide Information:
What is Blephamide?
Blephamide contains prednisolone (a steroid) and sulfacetamide (an antibiotic). Prednisolone reduces inflammation caused by bacterial eye infections, and sulfacetamide kills the bacteria causing the infection.
How do I take Blephamide?
Wash your hands before using the Blephamide eye drops, and shake the medication bottle gently before removing the dropper. Angle your head back slightly and pull your lower eyelid down to create a small pouch. Gently squeeze one drop into your eye while looking up and away. Close your eye and hold a finger to the inner corner of the eye for about a minute to prevent the medication from leaking out. If your doctor has instructed you to apply more than one drop to the same eye, wait about five minutes before repeating this process. You do not need to wait if you are applying a drop to the other eye.
Before taking Blephamide, tell your doctor if:
- You have ever had an allergic reaction to a sulfa drug
- You have any other known allergies
- You are using any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially other eye medications
- You have a viral or fungal infection in your eye
- You wear contact lenses
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Blephamide?
You are very unlikely to experience serious side effects while using Blephamide. Mild side effects may include itching, redness, stinging, burning, eyelid swelling, sensitivity to light, or blurred vision for a short amount of time after applying the eye drops. Let your doctor know if you have any side effects that bother you.
What if I forget to take a dose of Blephamide?
Apply the missed eye drops as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule. Do not double your dose to catch up.
How do I store Blephamide?
When you are not using Blephamide, keep its cap tightly sealed. Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. If you notice the solution has become discolored or has particles floating in it, throw the medication out. Ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of Blephamide if you are not sure.
What happens if I overdose on Blephamide?
You are not likely to overdose on Blephamide when applying it to your eyes. If you are concerned that you have applied too much of the solution, rinse your eye with water and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. You should also call Poison Control if you or someone in your household has swallowed some of the solution.
Warnings
When using Blephamide, do not let the tip of the dropper touch your eye or any other surface. This could cause the dropper to become contaminated, which may lead to a new eye infection. If this eye medication causes your vision to blur, do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or perform any other activities that require clear vision until you’re sure you can do so safely. Do not wear contact lenses or use other eye drops while using Blephamide unless your doctor has given you permission to do so.
